i was just wondering whether if i should select mic in or line in under the volume control panel when i plug my guitar into my soundcard?....and whats the difference? thanks :)
Line in
Line in
hey mike any idea whats the difference between mic in and line in? it seems that the mic in seems to make my signal louder
You've got it already! Mic-In is the same as Line-In, but it has a small boost (I think it's 5dB, but I'm not sure). Microphones generate a smaller amount of current and so need this boost to raise them up to the level of everything else. What you don't want to do, is to put a line level signal - such as a headphone output - into a Mic-In as you are bound to get distortion or clipping. A definite no-no is to put a speaker output - like the one on a back of a guitar amp - into a Line-In, or a Mic-In, or another guitar amp input. It is way too powerful and can damage whatever equipment you plug it into, unless it is specifically designed like speakers and certain expensive mixers.
