Okay so the band I'm in is covering glycerine by Bush and we have a friend who wants to play the violin part. The problem is that we have never miked one of these before. Equipmentwise we have two options, either A use an sm58 on a stand, or B tape a wireless mike (nady Something or other) in on or near the violin. The Violinist doseon't know which way would be better, and the rest of the band is split betweeen the wireless or the normal mike on a stand.
Any suggestions or Ideas would be welcome

Well, one of the best solutions is a piezo pick-up called a Hot Dot ($25). Unless the person has a very expensive violin, s/he shouldn't mind the non-marking putty that holds it in place. I've used it on a mandolin and acoustic guitars, and it works quite well. Not the best, but definitely the simplest effective solution.
Otherwise, I'd go with a mic on a stand...

thanks I'll have to check that out. :)

Heh, I misread that - thought for a second it said "Making a violin, need advice"... :mrgreen:

My parents saw this concert, and we follow this band close. One of the guitarists was my gym teacher in elementary.
Anyways, the fiddle always sounds good with these guys, and if you can zoom that in or something you can figure out what it is.

It's almost always lyrics...

I've been itching for both a violin, and a mandolin. But I'd play the violin more like a fiddle I think.
Vacate is the word...Vengance has no place on me or her...Cannot find a comfort in this world.

Violin = sitting down
Fiddle = standing up
And Charlie Daniels brings new meaning to "shredding" when he plays "Devil Went Down to Georgia" :twisted:
actually I might be getting a violin in the near future, the lady I'm miking is somewhat of an instrument junky, as far as I know she plays violin, piano, flute, piccolo, and she sings really well. but anyway she wants to learn guitar, and the only one she has is this old classicle acoustic which has a frettboard thats over 2 inches wide at the nut. Her hands just don't reach far enough to hit the low strings, and so far this has kept her from being able to really get into it. however she apparently has several violins, and agreed to trade me one for one of my guitars. (a green Hamer diablo made in korea) since I got my showmaster this guitar has just sat in a corner collecting cat fur, and it really deserves to be played. so hopefully if this all works out she'll have a good guitar to learn on and I'll have a violin to fiddle around with. :D

For amplifying an acoustic violin, Baggs pickups (piezo) are real nice. I played with a fiddle player for several years (I play as well) and he switched from using an SM57 to the Baggs. If you want a little less traditional sound, you could get an electric violin...Baggs is probably cheaper, though.
We have one in my band... he just went to the local music store and bought a pick up that slides into the saddle. it was a nice fishman one about $150 but it works really well.. so check that out
