Another option is to modify a smaller tube amp, such as the EVJ, with a triode switch. This lowers the output wattage to 2w from the 5w normal output. It's still very loud (especially through a cab) but it's more attainable at home and the distortion is even sweeter (I think) than when running the amp in pentode mode (the normal EVJ operating mode at 5 watts).

Triodes distort differently from pentodes or beam power tubes. Look at their plate characteristic curves. Steep slopes with smoothly rounded ends, vs. flat with steep dropoffs. Lots of the mods guitar players tend to like, or characteristics they select for, are aimed at making them behave more this way.
