In those days we would take a line out signal from a overdriven amplifier and feed it into another amplifier. What we were doing was adding overdrive tone with out changing the overdrive amount, then slaving that sound of the overdriven amplifier into a delay or effects, then into the another amplifier. Giving you that overdriven tone with effects and using the second amplifier for volume.

ahhh...the good old days.
Sometimes I get the feeling that things were a lot louder back then.

Yes they were. I drive 100 watt tube amp into a dummyload as a pre-amp. Its the same concept.
