Just got off the phone from the Aussie distributor for Vox and all but the 30 model in the XL series are available (the 30 won't be long). They confirmed the current Valvetronix are meant to complement the XLs not compete with them.

The RRP for the AD50VT2-XL is $749 so hopefully street price wil be no more than $650 (the AD50VT has a RRP $699.00 and advertised street price of $590.00 so probably sells for less). Considering the twin 12" speakers and extra features, the XL appears to be better value.

(Just came back to edit as the new 50 is called AD50VT2-XL possibly because of the two speakers. The new 30 XL has been upgraded with 12" speaker instead of the current 10".)

I'm going saturday to buy one of them. I don't really play anything much heavier then metalica and very little of that. I do like some AC/DC but i'm pretty sure the standard model will handle that. Not sure if i'll need the Xl other then the fact it has a 12" speaker i'm very interested in. Any of you guys with the standard run pedals? I'm also thinking of a EVH phaser and flanger pedal. How do pedals stackup to the onboard fx's?

Sorry Scott, I'm not up to using pedals stage of my guitar lessons yet (still very much a newbie).

Has anyone mentioned the excellent Valvetronix forum which has member-submitted presets?

Ron (and others :D )
I was checking out the new XL series and they are targeted to the "Heavier" amp models....
XL AMP MODELS
For the XL range of amplifiers, we wanted to design an amp with a selection of sounds
that would span the entire range of heavy music. We already had a truckload of great
amp models from the acclaimed "VT" or "Chrome" series, so we set to work brainstorming
ways that we could modify these sounds for the heavy player, at times throwing out
the rule book entirely. We found ourselves asking things like "What would this British
head sound like if it were Class A rather than Class AB? What if we gave a Californiastyle
EQ to a Bristish amp or vice versa? The results are some of the hottest hard rock
and metal sounds we've designed to date. And all of them are based on some of the
most legendary amps in history. So plug in an turn up. Extreme lead awaits!
Eleven amp sounds.
Sophisticated modelling technology is used to provide eleven different amps, including classic vintage amps of the past, costly, modern high-end amps and high-gain hybrids, all accessible at the turn of a knob.
These new models include
Glass, modelled on the Clean channel of a collectable 100-Watt head named the Overdrive Special;
Funked, modeled on a classic American black-faced 2x12 combo;
Buzzsaw, inspired by the British-made 50-Watt head that created the sounds of ‘70s hard rock and metal;
Crunched, based on a very rare modded VOX AC30/6TBX Top Boost combo, adding new hot-rodded gain levels and EQ; Thrashed, modelled on a 1983, all tube, single channel, master volume 100-Watt head;
Raged, based on the high gain channel of a modern, all-tube 100 Watter, with boosted bass and mid frequencies and even more gain;
Modern, a still higher gain modification to the “Modern High Gain” channel, with scooped EQ;
Fluid, the UK Modern setting with maximum gain and mid-range EQ, modified to emphasize a vocal-like tone for legato-style playing;
Molten, based on VOX's US Hi-Gain model but capable of even more powerful, heavily saturated sounds, with an Octave effect mixed into the preset;
Black, a version of the UK Modern mutated to Class A, rather than Class AB;
Damaged, rooted in VOX's US Hi-Gain model with more gain and a completely re-voiced and modified EQ to be thicker and darker.

So as you were saying earlier these new XL series are to comliment not compete with the VT series...

Hi Keith,

Yes, the rep at the Australian distributor stressed this when I was talking to him.

I'm looking forward from hearing from anyone who has compared the 10" speaker in the AD30VT to the 12" in the 30 XL. As a newbie I'm interested if it makes all that much difference.

I came very close to placing an order for a 50 XL today but decided to hang off until I've seen some feedback on the various forums.

Two really good resources for VOX Valvetronix owners. The first one has photo instructions for upgrading the AD30VT speaker as well as other goodies:

After a few hours with the Vox ad15 vt-xl, ad30vt, and the 30vt-xl (also a Roland cube 30). I ended up getting a Vox DA 20. It was just more versatile in my opinion. The xl versions of the 15 and 30 had just to much distortion for what I wanted. I do play some metal, but alot more classic rock and some blues. The DA 20 just gave me more tone in the range that I wanted and the 2 8" speakers are a nice setup. Gives it a really nice sound. Those of you looking for a heavier metal sound however should be pretty satisfied with the AD series. Before you buy though, plug into the Roland cube 30. Very impressive.
