It was introduced to annoy spammers. We were getting several spammers joining every day and the mods were having to try and get to them before they annoyed the "real" members. It has been a resounding success. We still get a few spammers coming and trying their luck, but we've reduced their options to the point where only the really determined keep trying.
We hope that you will enjoy GN more for the small price to pay.
I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
