i'm jane, 45, a physical therapist living in new york city.

i decided to play guitar earlier this year because i've always wanted to and now i finally have the chance (time and $), but i'm been off to a slow start. the cheapo guitar i bought in january fell and broke so i decided in april to buy something better. i bought a seagull m6. i was playing it for about six months wondering why i wasn't making any progress then figured out that something was wrong with it. so i brought it back to the store and they sent it back to canada. it took about two months to get back but now it has a new neck on it and it sounds great.

i had my first lesson last week with val and it seems that all of the things i was working on by myself finally came together. i had taught myself some scales, the basic chords, some strumming and changing chords smoothly and some finger exercises but i couldn't figure out how to play a song. so with my first lesson val got me into some songs. with her, i'm learning eleanor rigby, something called fuzzy, and el condor pasa. from guitar noise i'm working on horse with no name(!) and for what it's worth. (i'm now practicing that percussive thing.)

some music i like: joni mitchell, bob dylan, red hot chili peppers, radiohead, moby, leonard cohen, sonic youth.

i'm also involved in the sunday songwriters group (or was), but as nick knows, my writing is pretty bad.

my name is joie i love playing guitar too.. and Im a new member here in this forum, i hope i can find friends here who love to share and play music .. hi all..

Welcome to the madhouse (and the grand obsession).  This is a nice place to hang out.  Glad you're here.

I just posted an intro on the beginner's list, but I'll do it here, also :D.

I'm Beth, live in Austin, Texas (where we have a statue of Stevie Ray Vaughn so guitar playing is in the air).  I'm 42, have 2 boys and a dh.  The boys are just-turned 6 and almost 4.  The 6-year old doesn't like to listen to me play, but the younger one does!  I have a Seagull S-6 and really love it.  I've been playing mostly the chords to lots of songs, especially Neil Young, Beatles, U2, and lots of older folk and rock songs, like Woody Guthrie, Peter, Paul, and Mary, etc.  I also play kid songs, and every Friday I have a 'gig' playing for 3-5 year old special needs kids.  I have a lot of fun doing that!  I'm not a great player by any means, but getting to see a kid who is autistic and usually unresponsive smile at me while I'm playing is GREAT!

I'm really enjoying this site and have started to get into theory (baby steps anyway).  I also want to learn fingerstyle instead of just the strumming I do now.  When I was in school I played clarinet, and tried to play guitar in about the sixth grade, but washed out pretty quick.  Now I'm into it - at least as much as I can be after chasing kids around all day!

I've enjoyed 'meeting' the other folks out there.

I'm Tom, 44, from the Chicago area.  I've been a musician pretty much all my life, starting out as a wee lad playing percussion (which I later got to study at DePaul), and I still dabble at that, sitting in as tympanist with a local orchestra from time to time.

I got my first guitar in a rather roundabout way... my father wanted to play, and my mother gave him one for Christmas.  He strummed it a couple times, and put it in the closet.  A year or two later, my younger sister wanted to play, so Dad gave it to her for Christmas... she strummed it and put it in the closet.

When I was about 16 I went to a party where a guitarist was performing.  I watched his hands and thought "I could do that".  Swiped Sis' guitar that night, promptly busted a string.  Next morning I bought new strings and a Mel Bay book, and I was off and running.

Three years later I was in college studying percussion, but playing several hours of guitar a day, and teaching percussion at a local music store.  A new shipment of guitars had arrived, and I was checking one out... the owner of the shop, who taught guitar, promptly asked me to take on some of his students, and I was on my way.  The next year I opened my own shop, and the rest is pretty much history.

Over the last 25 years I've had the chance to sample a whole bunch of areas in music, performing, teaching, writing, producing, even composing a film score for a real low budget production some years back.  It's still just as much fun as it ever was, and my 13 year old seems to be following in my footsteps -- a percussionist for five years, now playing some bass and guitar and fronting his own trio.

Last Christmas hubby bought me a guitar, becuase I'd always wanted one, unfortunately it didn't come out much until I found this site and started again with renewed vigour. I have recently sold my keyboard so I can buy a good guitar and that has spurred me on even more, as it just sounds wonderful even if I am useless  ;D (thanks to all for advising me), I am pottering my way through the lessons and hoping to learn silent night in time for Christmas. Its great to be here.

Hi everybody!

My name is Serenity, and I am a 35-year-old (as of 4 Nov) child-free Army wife, orginally hailing from Chicago, IL -- now transplanted to Armed Forces Europe, Germany (specifically Hanau, Hessen, Germany).

My husband is currently serving Iraq for a year  :-[(7 months down and counting!) and I work as a supervisor of the small bookstore on post.

I am so excited to finally be playing the guitar. Not too many Black women I know of (personally or otherwise) actually play guitar; I was inspired by the wonderful India. Arie to at least give it a try.

My husband has been super-supportive of my desire to learn, but I am grateful he is not here to hear me trying  ::)

Please don't laugh -- I play a Daisy Rock. I am tiny and I first got a full-size Ibanez acoustic  and it was not a good experience. By the time my arm reached all the way around it, I was too stretched out and tired to strum!

Even though it is a little kiddie guitar, I am having much more success learning with the Daisy Rock because of the size -- 3/4, though I am looking to find a real guitar now in 3/4 size . I am really open to any suggestions anyone may have.

I am on my own with this -- most Army wives here are not interested in learning guitar or anything else -- so I purchased the Emedia Guitar Method software and have been having much success with that.

I look forward to chatting with other budding guitarists and receiving inspiration, and making contributions to this forum (when I am able).

A Yamaha accoustic that was cheap and a lovely new epiphone casino that go t a few weeks ago and am telling about to it to anyone who will care to listen.

It is the same model that John Lennon played on the roof at Abbey road, well he took his pickgaurd off and his was not made in korea but that doesnt tarnish my dreams.

this is a greate site and I am reccomending it to all my pals.

Been hanging around a while readin' some of the posts and trying my hand at the beginner lessons.

My name is Tim, from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  Picked up an inexpensive Yamaha acoustic just before my 45th Christmas and have been attempting to learn how to play for the past couple of years.

Had my self a "life altering event" (as a previous poster shared) or two in the last two years that provided me with a considerable amount of time, so I decided it was time I gave the guitar a try.  I had been wanting to get to it for some 30 years, but life seemed to get in the way - wife, kids, dog, job..... you know the drill.

I've been making pretty good progress but for some unknown reason I've discovered that I'm a theory nut and spent more time wondering why things worked the way the did and not enough time just playing.  My playing is gradually catching up to my theory knowledge - hopefully.

Interesting stuff here.  Glad to be aboard.

Hi everyone,

Im jennifer, 24, from texas.  I work for the USPS as a "data conversion operator"  which is a fancy way of saying....I sit in front of a computer terminal and view digital images of envelopes and try to decipher an address to give to the computer.  It sounds boring, I know,  but I get to listen to listen to headphones throughout the shift.  I think that listening to music for 6-10 hours a day really changed my taste in music, lol.  I also had my first thought of "I WANNA PLAY GUITAR" while listening to the Ziggy Stardust album, and hearing the solo in "star man"  at work.

Busy busy busy is the holiday season, so I haven't had much time to play guitar.  I hope to join in more lessons and add to discussions soon.

I love that guitar!  Sometime I plan to own one.  He stripped the finish off it too -- said it made it play better.  But I think he first got the guitar in 66, maybe 65.  McCartney had one too.
