I'm always on the lookout for bands with great song writing and guitar playing and just great all around sound. It's a fantastic way to learn.
I just wanted everyone to know about this band that my wife and I have become addicted to. The Eilen Jewel Band (and their permutations as the Country Gospel Brunch House Band and Whoa!Man!Jesus!) play a number of clubs in the Cambridge/Somerville Mass. area each week and have a solid set of originals and covers that represent the country blues sounds of Memphis Minnie to Bob Dylan to Lucinda Williams.

They will be playing at Club Helsinki in the David Hodge neighborhood of Great Barrington. They also play Tir Na Nog in Union Square Somerville every Saturday 5:30-8:30pm (this is a tiny little family friendly bar in the afternoon, you can grab inexpensive but tastey pub food and there will probably be a child or dog or two running around. All underage have to leave by 9pm, don't know about the dogs).
Highly Recommended!

For a slightly different take, they are running a [url= http://countrygospelbrunch.com/ ]Country Gospel Brunch[url] out of The Burren in Davis Square, Somerville, on Sundays (11am-2pm, I believe). They play old time country gospel and have had some amazing guest artists, including the guitarist from Mr. Airplane Man and members of the Tarbox Ramblers (the permanent fiddle player is a Rambler, as well.) Bring your parents and kids! (but you can still order a Bloody Mary, after noon).

If you like old time blues and gospel, maybe a hint of bluegrass and country, they will make your weekend.
If you like your blues a lot grittier, in the Fat Possum/ Junior Kimbrough/ T-Model Ford vien, try to catch [url= http://www.whoamanjesus.com/ ]Whoa!Man!Jesus![url].
