XP. I don't think MS is doing anything with 98 any more.

Microsoft Patches WMF Flaw Early
By Jim Wagner

If enough people complain, even software giants like Microsoft (Quote, Chart) will heed their call.

That's the takeaway from Redmond's advisory today saying it would patch a critical vulnerability in Windows metafile (WMF) today, earlier than it had planned.

The latest patch comes after a critical vulnerability in the Windows metafile (WMF) was discovered last week by security experts, one that could potentially open up a user's computer to remote exploitation and make changes to the system.

Originally, the company had intended to release the patch next week during its regularly scheduled Patch Tuesday security vulnerability update.

But Microsoft said today it had moved the timetable up because it finished up tests early on the patch, as well as a way to respond "to strong customer sentiment that the release should be made available as soon as possible," according to the advisory.

Is that what got updated last night? I had an update installed this morning but wasn't sure which one it was. I had read that Microsoft was telling everyone to use a third party fix that was already out.

becksbolero, np

Crank-N-Jam, i think that those who chose to use the third party fix may have to go thru another process to first remove the third party fix and then update, but i'm not clear on that.
i would suggest further research to make sure.

If you installed the third party fix then you just have to install MS's fix, reboot, uninstall the third party fix, and then reboot again. Or something like that. The third part fix didn't modify any files, so it can be uninstalled before or after installing MS's fix.
