Musicians Friend has a few Squier 51's for sale. They're blemished, but I'm sure you modders don't care. They're selling them for 76.99, which is dirt cheap compared to what they are selling for on ebay. If anyone picks one up I'd like to hear.

Good grief - the cable and strap I use cost more than that!

£38.50 for a guitar's about the nearest I've ever seen to giving them away!

Not very good reviews on that particular page, though, are they?

:D :D :D

They must be sold out now, because when I click on the "add to cart" button it takes me to another page. Oh well.

There were 2 Squier '51's at my local store, brand new. This was just before Christmas though. I think they have been there for a while though. At $199 a piece I could never justify getting one. A Squier standard Tele or Strat is only $100 more. I really should play one if they are still there to see what the hype is about. I'd never buy one because they are butt ugly but doesn't cost me anything to play them at the store.

$200 is really a good deal for an electric that has as much tonal variety, and plays as well as a 51,imo.
and i actually think they look pretty kewl too, (imo)
they are cheap to mod and/or upgrade as well, heck it's a strat body with a tele neck.

when i can, i'm going for the black hardware, tuners, etc, on my blonde/butterscotch.
i just wish i could find a nice machined bridge in black, for under $50

you can always take the pickguard off and replace or alter the switchplate as well.
search the web for 51 mods, there are some that really look very nice(imo)
several were done by some of our members here.

How is paying less for the same parts from the same Indonesian factory not justifiable?

It's not justifiable because:

1) I think they are ugly. Don't like the shape of the pickguard, the colours they come in or the whole strat neck with tele neck thing. Just easier to buy the strat.
2) They have no trem bar, which I'd like to have at least on my next guitar.
3) It's $200 on a guitar I don't really want.

Honestly, I doubt there is anything wrong with the guitar, most of the videos I found on youtube for it were impressive. Tone is a little bright and thin for my taste but not bad. I didn't end up choosing a Squier Standard when I saw the '51 at the store though. I left with a Fender Jaguar instead, bit of a price jump but better value for me.

That tone I liked. I figured most of the videos I found were not using the humbucker, or had it tapped.
