You should be able to get this one for under $1000. Most stores will come down off the list price 20% or so. I've got the lefthanded version and I love it. Play it before you buy!

I highly reccomend Canadian made guitars, espesicilly a Seagull or a Laviree. http://www.seagullguitars.com/ and http://www.larrivee.com/ . They are exellent quality and offer IMO a better sound than some USA made Taylores or Martins. :)

For $1000 your possibilties are endless.

Besides the obvious, Taylor, Martin, Gibson look for some used stuff.

A used S series Breedlove. I've owned a SC20 Koa, phenomenal.

You could find a used Lakewood at about that price point.

An early 70's Mossman.

A used Larrivee. Check out the Larrivee forums classified page. $850 will get you a hell of a guitar.

A used Flyde Orsino. I have one and it's a great guitar.

In regards to Larrivee's I know a few people who would definitely agree that they are easily in the same league as Martin's and Taylors and at a resonably lesser price.

My dad has a seagull and it sounds great. And my uncle who has played for like 35 years droped his jaw when he found out my dad has one. So seagull is a good name. Just dont go near one of those Johnson's for 99.00. yuck! :x thats my first one and I still havnt gotten another one but need it bad. But I shouldnt talk to bad about it b/c I've gotten lots of complements on how good I did with it. But anyways my point is yea I agree that a seagull is a good acoustic guitar. :D
