President - hard to say, really. I definately remember Johnson, and I think I remember Kennedy, but he became such a cultural icon that those memories might be acquired after the fact.
Car - I don't remember what I drove first. My parents didn't own a car when I was learning to drive, so we borrowed from grandparents... probably a '65 Olds 88. First one I owned was a '71 Maverick that I got cheap.
Event - MLK's assasination really whomped me upside the head more than anything I recall earlier... I still remember watching his televised funeral with my mother.
Guitar teacher offering lessons in Plainfield IL
Ronald Reagan
1993 Plymouth Duster
Baby Jessica falling down the well. Ok, that's not a life changing event. Challenger blowing up!
1. Nixon is the first president I really remember (arguing about who would win the 1968 election with my 3rd-grade classmates), although I can recall my family's horror and grief when Kennedy was assassinated. (Kennedy's photo was actually mounted on the wall in my grandparents' house)
2. Learning to stick-shift a bright yellow Chevy Vega (don't know the year) owned by an older friend, in an empty parking lot (no learner's permit). Lotta lurching and lotta fun! :D
3. Other than events already mentioned, I vividly recall the shootings at Kent State University. My older siblings were in college and so the protests, riots, etc on college campuses were being closely watched at my house. Also, the military draft lotteries on television, since my brother was of the age to be selected.
Great thread!
