I don't blame you! It was a GREAT car! I could pile 9 people into space for 4 (think that might be why my doors fell off?) :D  :lol:I believe in that Karmann Ghia you were piling 9 in a space for 2. Real togetherness.

I can remember going to see Johnny Winter and James Cotten. This guy named Frank Centauro was driving. He was 6'8 and had a ford pinto. The front drivers seat was removed and he'd sit on the back seat to drive. Was a bit over 60 miles each way and there were 7 of us crammed into that thing.

Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.

Prime Minister:

Harold Wilson

First Car:

Learned to drive 1973-74 in a rusting 1960 Austin Mini fondly remembered for having a "no syncromesh" gearbox. A speedo that bounced from 55-90 when doing probably about 65-70 flat out. A lovely floor mounted starter button, sliding front side windows. burned oil all the time.

Passed my test and replaced her with a beautiful Cherry Red 1969 Hillman Super Imp. Missed the dear old Mini though. Had to trade her in with my beloved Lambretta GP150 scooter to afford the Imp.

First Bad Events to affect me:

Kennedy being shot.

Aberfan disaster (Like Vic Lewis said the kids were our age) don't think the village ever recovered properly.

Donald Cambell crashing at Conniston Water in Bluebird 1967 trying to break the Water Speed record.

Vietnam! (real war in your living room not good!) We still haven't learned have we!

First Good events:

The Beatles Royal Command Performance 1963

England v Germany 1966 World Cup. What a day! and I'm not a football fan. (Opps sorry Vic I like Rugby)

The whole Gemini and Apollo Space Program. Especially the Christmas Message from moon orbit and the final landing!

Thats enough from me.

Cheers all

Chris

The guitar is all right John but you'll never make a living out of it! (John Lennon's Aunt Mimi)

I think the survival stories were just spin. He was secretly replaced by a hollywood B movie actor.

Nick, where did you get that sense of humour? It's admirable 8)

a "no syncromesh" gearbox. A.K.A., a "crash box."

A lot of VWs here... I had 8 bugs at one time... Me and a bunch of buddies rented a 12 bay garage and filled it with cheap cars... We used to switch motors for the weekend for something to do - the record to get one out was 12 minutes... Wish I would have be into guitars this much back then... But, still wish I would have kept that 58 ragtop and 69 that I totally restored...

I'll only be down there (in the basement practicing) for a couple of minutes or so...

Holden is part of GM (General Motors, not gen. mod.) and they sound like the Opel range of cars, if you get those in the US.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

1 Reagan or maybe the norwegian King Olav V (that's easier - I've only experienced two of them thusfar :) )

2. I think Ford Cortina - but then I was way underaged. One of the first I drove legally was my father's beautiful 1978 E12 BMW 525 - yellow with green interior. *sigh*

3. Hmm - The first "real" news I remember was the Norwegian Oil-platform alexander Kielland tipping over in 1980 killing 123 people :( http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/march/27/newsid_2531000/2531091.stm

Holden is GM's Australian brand. Lots of Holdens used the same 194 c.i.d. straight Six engine they brought out in the U.S. with the Chevy II.

My older sister's first car was a little Opel! I can't remember much about it except that it was blue!

What was the first major "life changing" or at least perspective changing event you remember?

Getting on the bus with my nanny and not being allowed to sit with her because she was black, I was white, and she had to sit in the back.

Said hey little boy you can't go where the others go
cos you don't look like they do

"The Way It Is"
Bruce Hornsby

The woman who refused to give up her seat on the bus died last year. I read the obituary wondering what it must be like to make world history.

A :-)

I work for JPMorgan. We used to accept slaves as collateral for loans and even foreclosed on some when loans defaulted - taking possession of people and selling them to get our money back. Makes you think.
