Is there a name given to describe a song that a band does about themselves? If there is, what is it?
It's driving me nuts because the only good example comes to mind is "Hey, Hey, we're the Monkees"
I also thought of "Bad Company" by Bad Company, but I don't know if that really qualifies because it's not really about the band, it's about a gunslinger.
In trying to think about this, I noticed a lot of performers/bands do songs about fictional bands, like:
Dire Straits - "Sultans of Swing"
Elton John - "Bennie and The Jets"
David Bowie - "Ziggy Stardust"
So If anyone can think of examples of either of these two types of songs, post them here.
Now look at them yo-yo's that's the way you do it you play the guitar on the MTV
The Monkee's song was a bit different in that it was the theme tune to their TV series, not just a song about themselves. Plenty of others have sung the themes to their own TV series, Lee Majors comes to mind singing the theme to that series he was in about a stunt man.
There have been any number of groups, over the years, who have brought out records having the same name as the group, like Spud Masher by the Spud Mashers. They were almost all "new" dances and 99.999999999% turn out to be one hit wonders (that's if they even manage a hit).
I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

Oh, I remember that series, it was called "Fall Guy" I don't remember the theme, that's probably a good thing though.

That's the one! Lee Majors doesn't have the best voice in the world and the only memorable thing about the series was the blonde eye candy.

Lets see,
The Beatles - "Sgt. Pepper..."
Def Leppard - "Rocket" In the lyrics, a lot of fictional rockstars are mentioned. Give it a listen sometime.
I've got a lot of good ideas. Trouble is... most of them suck!
Turn the Page - Bob Seger
Rock n Roll Band - Boston
