Lucy's Drunken Angel on Austin City Limits:
"The man who has begun to live more seriously within
begins to live more simply without"
-Ernest Hemingway
"A genuine individual is an outright nuisance in a factory"
-Orson Welles
I used to do a version of Lucinda's "Drunken Angel". Great song!
EDIT: Thanks, Ken! :D

philly, +1 on Just Wont Burn. I randomly ordered it years back and haven't been disappointed, I keep returning to it time and time again.
Now, how did we reach page 5 with no mention of Joni Mitchell?
I found her through Emma Thompson in the movie Love Actually, and I still gotta get this version of clouds - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2wgxeYy4RE
but I have a bunch of her stuff now, gotta cite Blue, California, and All I Really Want To Do as other great tracks!
For some reason, I'd seen her on the Last Waltz and it didn't do it for me. But, when Emma Thompson tells Alan Rickman, "she taught your poor cold ENglish wife how to feel," you gotta take her seriously and investigate. 8)
And this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgMEPk6fvpg shows how she's really grown and redefined herself. Just listen to the change in her voice and her style! I've loved Joni since about 1970 or 71!

See, that's proof that my anti-joan baez thing is irrational. Joan Baez, I suffer. Joni singing like in that clip, perfectly wonderful. :?
on a non-female vocal point, the clip I posted....the Rickman/Atkinson scene cracks me up every time.
A couple more just came to me! This thread is too cool! I've spent an entire day listening to music and watching videos and have accomplished absolutely nothing! It's a good thing I don't work anymore or I'd probably be fired!
Joan Armatrading (Down to Zero is my favorite song of hers.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XqiAvMtJ_8
And someone who reminds me of Joan is Tracy Chapman:

lol, when you mentioned Joan, I immediately thought "and Tracy Chapman...."

Me too and me too.
And I'm still working my through these posts. Almost caught up.
Another song iPod added was Amy Winehouse's Back to Black (coke head or not she can sing)
Natalie Merchant is someone who I've listened to lately http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3frpqSQAEVA&feature=related
A song of hers that I really, really like is When They Ring the Golden Bells but YouTube doesn't have it.
The song is in two parts Traditional vocal (I guess Irish folk/Christian lyrics) and than a fantastic instrumental.
It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.
I see quite a bit of people that I've never heard of, or even more that I've forgottona bout and never gotten albums of CDs.
I'm watching some movie last week and there was one song that was performed rather soulfully and I really enjoyed it. I waited for the credits, found the song and artist name. Jump over to you tube with this information and found plenty, including where he's got some music house accross the pond filled with about 10,000k people. So I ran a search on wiki for him. Sur enough. He's been successful forever, but I had never been exposed to him. The guy's name is Chris Rea. Sold over 30 million albums world-wide. I was feeling like a moron.

I had an intra-cranial re Joni: Yeah, she belongs, even if only for her singing on Twisted.
Best Alan Rickman: As Archangel Gabriel in Dogma. Tilda is a v. good 'bad' Gabriel; but Alan is perfect, esp opposite Linda Fiorentino.

I know that this will be the least popular of the artists mentioned here, but Rickie Lee Jones would be my choice for the best female vocal/artist. Even though she has a broad spectrum of music in her repertoire and is an outstanding guitarist, I think she is the most underrated female musician.
Her music ranges from jazz to country, from rock to pop, blues to bee bop. Her songwriting and composing is far different than anything I've heard. I guess that's why I liked her so much. She often used many different melodies and counter melodies in a single song. IMO, The harmonies she uses in her songs would challenge most of today's singers.
Teamwork- A few harmless flakes working together can unleash an avalanche of destruction.
I like Rickie Lee Jones, also! Always have! I contemplated putting her up here, don't know why I didn't, so now I will! :D

Hey, didn't she date Tom Waits for a long while????
Dug that Chuck E's in Love song 8)
Don't know what the big deal was with the flapper bob though....

There's a pretty wicked solo at the end too, so double fun.
