Hi,

I am going to but a new guitar and want your opinion which is the best to buy?

1. Washburn EA18 - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Washburn-EA18-Tobacco-Sunburst-Elec-Acoustic-RRP-299_W0QQitemZ280133353709QQihZ018QQcategoryZ22966QQcmdZViewItem

2. Ovation CC024

3. Takamine EG260C

4. Yamaha APX500

At the moment i am leaning towards the Washburn as the price is cheaper than the rest and i did not want to go over £200, but will up my budget if needed.

Cheers,
Adam

Welcome to GN.

these are all nice entry level guitars, i would suggest trying them with a friend who plays or have a sales person play them for you. pick the one that feels and sounds best to you.

electric/acoustics at the entry level often do not sound very good (imo) unamplified
an acoustic amp or PA with proper mixing will be needed to coax the best tone from them.

if you can i would suggest saving more money and buying something in the $350-$500 range.

if you don't really need a E/A guitar to start i would just get a better acoustic with a solid top.

if you are set on these i would say any of them will do, but i would not buy sight unseen. get one from a shop. preferably one that has a guitar tech or luthier that can set it up for you.

I have to agree with TL. I played entry level guitars for years and was never satisfied with the sound. My wife finally told me to stop whining and splurge to buy what I really wanted to play. Well, I didn't splurge quite as much as I would have liked, but I did buy a solid Takamine A/E that I am very pleased with. It has encouraged me to play and learn more. And, that's really what it's all about.

(and, NO, you can't have my wife)

Regards,
Wyle :)

I've never owned an Ovation but once read a post on a forum where a guy said something along the lines of, "I kept the Ovation away from the rest of my guitars, should it suck the tone from them too." They're meant to be played plugged in, and you may not get the full value of one noodling away in the house.

For what it's worth, I'm a fan of Yamaha guitars, so that would be my pick.

Regards,
Paul

I like the Yamaha, I was playing it some time ago and it is very playable.

I agree with TwistedLefty, go to a store and try the guitars. You must play them and feel how they sound and how they are for you. Sometimes we abuse of the lists and catalogues.

And if you don't need play plugged, don't buy an electro/acosutic. Save the money or go the a better guitar.

And welcome to GN!

+1 on go try them

+1 on spend you money on solid (make sure the literature says exactly "solid" spruce or cedar -- not select) top acoustic only guitar, unless you always will use it plugged in.

+1 on Yamaha -- usually high band for the buck, especially in terms of tone.

I've heard good things about the Yamaha APX's, that said I've owned a Washburn EA20SDL which was a fantastic guitar but unfourtunately had to get sold to thin out the herd.

Go with what TL says on the acoustic with a pickup. Adding a pickup is going to cost the manufacturer money and to keep the price down (below your 200 pound budget) the manufacturer has to be cutting corners somewhere else.

You might want to extend your search to include the Godin family of acoustic guitars. They make the Seagull brand acoustic - I have an M6 but on your budget you might want to look at the S6. If the Seagull is too expensive Godin also makes a more value brand called Norman.

Does that mean you got it? :D If so, you're obligated to post pics in the "Post Your Gear" thread! (It's under Guitar Players Discussion.)

yes, it is an unwritten law here at GN that all new purchases require at least one pic, and a full hearted sales pitch to inspire someone else to G.A.S.
