i have about $400 for a new guitar because the one i have right now is pretty bad (i just got it to see if i would stick with playing guitar) now that im sure i will continue playing i want something that i can appreciate more and have for quite some time.

Is 400$ enough for a guitar that will last me (if need be i will spend more)

What kind of guitar would you recomend for an intermediate player

and is acoustic/electric worth thnking about spending a little more on

You can get something halfway decent for $400. A Seagull, a Blueridge, a Yamaha, a Takamine...

Take a few minutes to browse through the staff recommendations in this forum and then read How to Buy a Guitar. You should find some help there. Good luck.

Buy used; more guitar for your money.

check the local stores, classifieds, etc for used. you want to be able to check it out personally.
unless you are very confident about what you want i would not make my first upgrade purchase "sight unseen".
Used is the way to go.
A/E is really not worth it unless you plan on immediatly playing live and need the amplification.
