Hello, I am going to be creating a creepy/horror animation which I would also like to play the musical score for as well. My first question is,

Is it ok with copyright issues and such if I play someone's work in my own movie or would I have to credit like say soinso's "blahblah" played by myself.

My second question is what are some creepy songs I could learn to play which might go along with this creepy/horror genre. No metal, I was looking for something classical or inventive (silent hill'ish if you know what i mean)

if it involves a vampire, you must use Toccata and Fugue by Bach! That's about as classic as it comes. But honestly, it might seem cheesy :)

as for "scary", maybe do some kind of minor chord/arpeggio progression with flanger and a bit of delay?

Hey, strehld and welcome to GN.
There's a mountain of classical music that falls outside any copyright protection.
Check this site:

I'm pretty sure anything posted there is copyright free.
Cheers
:)

Danse Macabre. Is that Saint-Saens? Don't recall.
Symphony Fantastique - Hector Berlioz.

It is difficult to answer when one does not understand the question.

Alright, I had some time to check most of em out.

ph0nage- ya that's a bit too cheezy and its too recognized, there wont be any vampires in this one  but I will experiment with effects and such.

boxboy- i haven't had time to look through it but ya there's alot of music on there for me to shuffle through, thanks

Minotaur- on the right track but I'm looking for something a little less fancy :)

Here is an example, I really like this song and I might end up using this but I'm still going to look around, I've got lots of time for this so I'm in no rush.

I like In the Hall of the Mountain King.

And also Mars, Bring of War, but that's a little more recongnized.

It's a dry heat!

yeah, Mars by Holst is amazing. You might even think that it feels a lot like "imperial march" from star wars

And if you're going to use something that's still under copyright in your own movie you will need permission in advance - be prepared for it to cost you a lot of cash if it's something popular too.

If that's the kind of vibe your going for, I'd suggest late romantic piano music...Chopin for example.

FYI a composer has to have been dead for at least 70 years b4 his music is public domain, otherwise you need permission, legally speaking.

Indeed, Lucas originally used Mars in the movie, then told Williams to write something similar.

Or something like that...

Mars by Holst isn't really that creepy. Its suggests hulking size and power, IMHO.

Here's a great and simple Rock song, definitely fits the subject, Boris the Spider by The Who.

This was the first song by The Who I ever heard, around 1966 I believe. :D

If you know something better than Rock and Roll, I'd like to hear it - Jerry Lee Lewis

Yep, considering the full title is Mars, The Bringer of War. Great piece.

Addams Family Theme ?

Or maybe a mashup of Addams Family and Pink Panther's theme with your innovation should do wonders.

Good Luck !
