Hello all:
I'm just starting out - need to buy (or rent) a "starter" bass, amp and whatever else I will need.
Any guidelines or suggestions as to what I should get, buy or rent, etc. ?
Bob
P.S. I own a pretty good nylon string acoustic guitar (actually, I own 2). Perhaps I should work with those for a while before buying the real thing?
What's not "the real thing" about your pretty good nylon string guitar?
Is it bass you're wanting to play?
Jeff
Yes, electric bass.
Yamaha makes a fine bass. look in the 500-600$ range.
I just bought for a young friend a Fender Rumble bass amp. 10 inch speaker. it is actually a really nice little amp. nice and loud for home use (his mom told me) and you can plug in headphones and connect to a CD player too so you can jam along.
I was surprised by this small amp.
I only play bass occasionally. each time there was a Yamamha lying around. one fretless was teriffic.
That Yamaha might be a beautiful buy, but I am getting the impression that Bob is trying to do this a bit more inexpensive than that? I would suggest the Rondo line;

They were suggested to me on here actually, a while ago. I was looking for an instrument for a Christmas present for a friend, & I ordered the SX SJB-57 BK with Maple neck. This instrument is amazing - you would definantly not think you are playing a $100 guitar.
I am hooked on this company, I will be buying more from them. I have my eye on the Agile AL-3100 Nat Spalted Slim elect. guitar... Maybe if Santa treats me right...
Thanks - the Rondo line looks like it's just what I want - for now.
Can anyone recommend a good beginners DVD to get me started on electric bass?

The Hodge book is on my buy list.
But there's a lot of learning that you can get by watching a teacher illustrate a particular technique rather than reading about it in a book.
So any DVD suggestions would be appreciated.
Bob
This looks like it might be good for beginners, especially if you get the book that goes with it:

His other "primer" books get good reviews, so the bass one should be alright.
"Everybody got to elevate from the norm."
I have some coupons that I can use on Amazon.
They list a "Yamaha Gigmaker" package for under $300.
Whaddya think?
