Hey fellow rockers. I was runnin' through my play lists the other day, and I realized a VERY similar, hell almost exact intro of two different songs, from two different bands. I wanted anyone elses opinion on this, and see what you guys think. Sure the tempo may be slightly different, and of course, recording engineering would change tone of it and stuff, but overall, listen to these two songs, and tell me that they are not the SAME intro. Even if they are, theres really no point, I just think its interesting how two bands can make the same intro to a song. Either somebody is a copy cat or there just both geniuses lol.

Take a look at the intros.

Lynard Skynard - Simple Man The First 00:09 Seconds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKadLUXcLJc&feature=related

The Scorpians - Always Somewhere Mainly the first 00:15 Seconds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48dmid3uQA0

Check out the intros on those two songs. They are disturbingly the same thing. :?

What do you guys think

- Josh

Sing Me A Song Your a Singer, Do me a wrong, your a bringer of evil. - Dio

ELO's "10538 Overture" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUk-xB86o2c from about 10s to 23s

I find some strange similarity between the intros of 'Hurt' by Johnny Cash and 'Californication' by RHCP.

Seems like RHCP took a bow from Mr. Cash's song...

well, they both start with simple I-V (c to g? i don't have my guitar in my hands) arpeggios, which is a very common progression. but they're not "extremely" similar, imo, since they diverge after that. anyway, since that sort of arpeggio is so simple, you could probably find dozens of other songs with that sort of feel to it.
btw, "hurt" was written by nine inch nails, and johnny cash's version is pretty true to the original. it's the broken arpeggio that makes the two have a similar rhythm, but the chords are a lot different.

i know there's a song that predates radiohead's creep that sounds extremely similar. a lot of people think radiohead ripped it off. can't think of the name right now, though.

Comparing progressions is lame, with only seven chords in a key there are only so much chord progressions possible without going fancy, and only a few of those possible make sense. And since there are millions of song every given progression will match with thousands and thousands of songs. Big deal.

Oh I don't know - I think it's fun sometimes, comparing similarities between songs. And yes, there may be only seven chords in a key, but there's a hell of a lot of different ways to play them!

Here's another two to compare - this one was a huge hit for Elvis in the 60's.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lU18Uaz0jtY

and this was a hit for Smokie in the 70's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWEarD2_XWQ

Mr Reznor's song... but close enough as the Cash version brings out the emotion, instead of hiding it under too much distortion and that daft discordant note that's only been put there to annoy ;)

I'm with Vic - I don't think it's bad (not like taking an entire song, stripping the vocals and just dribbling some inane chavvy gibberish over the top), but it's interesting. I like to hear where each band/artist goes with the same basic idea.

Except for the small, but overlooked fact that Californication came out in 1999 and the immortal Mr. Cash's version of Hurt was released in 2002 on the album American IV - The Man Comes Around.

Pretty sure you're thinking of The Air That I Breathe by the Hollies (written, I believe, by Albert Hammond of It Never Rains in Southern California fame).

But these are all just chord progressions, and like virtually every chord progression, they've been around longer than most recorded history...

Peace

I always thought that Dire Straits "Romeo and Juliet" sounds a LOT like Jethro Tulls "She Said She Was A Dancer". Don't know if the chords are the same or not but in general feel they're very similar!

Both great songs though!

there's a Dylan song which I might take the trouble to find the name for which sounds suspiciously like he was rewriting the lyrics to Norwegian Wood by the Beatles. Or the other way around, since I can't quite recall which Dylan album it's off.

Ra Er Ga.

Ninjazz have SuperChops.
