So, I was hanging out late this afternoon and evening watching VH-1 Classic and a show was on. Something about the top 100 80's songs. I thought it might make a fun little topic. That, and the meds had an affect too. I digress.
OK, so list your favorite 5 (or so) songs from the 80's. To make things interesting, rules.....
Rules
#1: Must be something that was at least sort of popular back then.
#2: Must include at least 2 genres. Spouting off your favorite metal songs or whatever you think is cool is too boring. Come on. I know you all had some songs you liked, but would never tell your friends. Someone here liked Bananarama. Admit it. We know who you are, Bish.
#3: OK, so not a rule so much as another interesting twist. Should be some things you liked while it was popular.
I'll open myself to laughter and start. Certainly not a complete list, but what the heck. Just stuff that hit my mind in the last 10 minutes.
In no order.....
Melt With You - Modern English (New Wave)
Electric Avenue - Eddie Grant (Raggae---sort of)
Come On Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners (New Wave?)
Once Bitten, Twice Shy - Great White (Metal, I guess?)
Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits (Rock)
Steppin Out - Joe Jackson (Um, whatever he was)
Weird thing about that whole decade for me was that my, um, fashion sense never left the 70's burnout look.

"I wonder if a composer ever intentionally composed a piece that was physically impossible to play and stuck it away to be found years later after his death, knowing it would forever drive perfectionist musicians crazy." - George Carlin
I looooove the 80's!
Rio - Duran Duran (new wave)
Add it Up - The Violent Femmes (punk?) (not really a favorite but one I remember from that genre)
Always Something There to Remind Me - Naked Eyes (pop)
Wait - White Lion (metal)
Bust a Move - Young MC (rap)
8)
All my life I wanted to be somebody. Now I see I should have been more specific.
really hard making a top 5 so i just picked whatever came to mind that wasn't the usual straight up rock
Love Shack - The B-52s
Down Under - Men At Work
Here Comes the Rain Again - Eurythmics
She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals
Beds Are Burning - Midnight Oil
#4491....
Yeah, very hard to pick a handful. Off the top of my head:
RUSH - Spririt of Radio (First track on Permanent Waves, officially released 1/1/80, making it arguably the first song of the 80s)
CLASH - London Calling (okay, technically December 1979, but what the heck)
POGUES - If I Should Fall From Grace With God
JAM - Town Called Malice
U2 - Bad
AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long
REM - Radio Free Europe
PETER GABRIEL - In Your Eyes
REPLACEMENTS - B*st*rds of Young
TUBES - Talk To Ya Later
And a million more ...
"Everybody got to elevate from the norm."
Status Quo - Live at NEC
Springsteen - Born In The USA
Travelling Wilburys - Vol. 1
U2 - Joshua Tree
Big Country - Steeltown
I bought all those albums on vinyl; the first four have been upgraded to CD's since, though I still have all the original vinyl albums somewhere up in the attic!
Still play them, too!
:D :D :D

"Sometimes the beauty of music can help us all find strength to deal with all the curves life can throw us." (D. Hodge.)
There are two to by bands I can't remember.
One song has a chorus that goes "...that's when I reached for my revolver." I love this song, please help.
The other is "I might like you better if we slept together."
Then there's
Wall of Voodoo "Call of the West"
Ultravox "I want to be a machine"
Dead Kennedys "Moon Over Marin"
Gary Numan "Down in the Park"
XTC "Dear God"
X "We're Desperate"
Duran Duran "Hungry Like The Wolf"
Ramones "End of the Century"
The Dictators "Baby Let's Twist"
Devo "Freedom of Choice"
King Crimson "Elephant Talk"
Every thing of John and Yoko's "Double Fantasy" Is that the 80's? I don't know, but it sure set things up.

Ah, the 80s! Early 80s was my high school years, so pop music was important to me back then. Again, too many to choose, but here are some "off the top of my head" choices:

Rock This Town - Stray Cats
We Are The World - just about everybody!
Our House - Madness
Back In Black - AC/DC
Crazy Train - Ozzy
Red Rain - Peter Gabriel
Pump Up The Volume
Whip It - Devo
Keep On Loving You - REO Speedwagon

I could go on, but that's a pretty big list!
The other is "I might like you better if we slept together."
I know one of them. It's called, Never Say Never - Romeo Void. Good song! Don't know the other one.
One song has a chorus that goes "...that's when I reached for my revolver." I love this song, please help.

It's funny this thread showed up, I just "DJed" an 80's party for a friend of mine 2 weeks ago, since I have about 20 hours of 80's music.
1. AC/DC - Back in Black (the whole album): My 2 best friends and I drank and smoked a lot while listening to either this, Ozzy's Randy Rhodes tribute album or Beastie Boys' Licensed to Ill.
2. Higher Love - Steve Winwood: not because I like the song so much, because if always reminds me of that time w/ that girl...
3. Fallin' Apart at the Seams - Cinderella: Their first album was "okay." They looked like Poison, but they rocked harder, so we gave 'em a pass. But I remember buying their 2nd album and hearing that first song and realizing they were actually pretty damn good. Plus they dropped the makeup.
4. Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House: It's just a great song.
5. Holiday in Cambodia - Dead Kennedys
6. Rock of Ages - Def Leppard: The video scared my mom :D
7. Listen Like Thieves - INXS
8. Best of Both Worlds - Van Halen: VH was my favorite group and I was devastated by DLR leaving, but I was able to accept Sammy
9. Heat of the Moment - Asia
10. Jungle Love - Morris Day & the Time
11. Rock This Town - Stray Cats: My first concert was the Stray Cats at the Ryman Auditorium (yes, where the Grand Ole Opry lives).
Oenyaw, the second song you are talking about is Romeo Void's "Never Say Never."
Mission of Burma

Wow, a thread that is right up my alley! I've been stuck in the 80's for years, & I don't plan on moving forward anytime soon! I even thought about turning my pc/recording room into an "80's shrine" of sorts, but I haven't got that motivated yet. I could travel down many genre roads here, but I will "play by the rules" & also try to keep it to 5 or so songs.
I know, I am all over the road with these, but anyway... :D Fair warning; I reserve the right to add more later!

I tried to follow the 'rules'. My only nit: 'Popular' is relative. I listend to a lot of college radio in the 80s and what was popular there, was not necessarily popular on MTV and top 40 radio stations. The 80s was my alternative and blues phase so that's mostly what you see below. In any case, it was a fun trip down memory lane. Here's a random sample of some favorites from the 80s...
The Bangles - Hero Takes A Fall (a guity pleasure)
Ratt - Round and Round (another guilty pleasure)
Clash - Rock The Casbah
Tom Petty And the Heartbreakers - The Waiting
Marshall Crenshaw - Wild Abandon
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Pride and Joy
Husker Du - Pink Turns Blue
R.E.M. - Driver 8

Pixies - Bone Machine
Fun times...
