I picked Cobain. There are alot up there I could have picked and felt good about it but I always loved Cobains passion in his songs. I couldnt honestly even tell you what some of his lyrics are, but to me they speak to my heart like another instrument and I feel the rythem of what he is saying.

Have to agree with Kent Eh. I don't think anyone can weave words the way he can. Maybe I'm just psyched as just finished watching his induction into the Canadian Songwriters hall of fame. Willie Nelson performed Bird on a Wire,KD Lang did Hallelujah and Rufus Wainwright sang Everybody Knows. Great stuff. He has had his songs recorded over a 1000 times by different artists.
Robbie (Eh too)

Sublime to goofy, both music and lyrics: David Byrne

Some of the finest pop songcrafting (next to Paul Simon): Neil Finn (of Split Endz, Finn Bros. and Crowded House)

Not my favorite, but deserving of inclusion: Bruce Stringsteen

As off-the-wall than Zappa: John and John of They Might Be Giants

When the piano has been drinking: Tom Waits

What no women?: Beth Orton

Yeah, he's jazz too: Leon Redbone (and maybe separated at birth from Zappa?)

Swing to country to down home, and a truly understated, but immense talent: Lyle Lovett

I really hate to separate them, 'cause musically, they were best together: Lennon and McCartney

What no women? II: Suzanne Vega

Not widely appreciated: Duncan Shiek

Too bad you missed her: Kirsty MacColl

Anybody remember?: Harry Chapin

ditto Hiatt, Prine, Simon

Aimee Mann

Stevie Wonder

Andy Partridge (of XTC)

Robbie Robertson

don't foget the Motown team of Holland, Dozier and Holland

Ani DiFranco

Pete Townsend

Joni Mitchell

and no songwriting list would be complete without a big tip of the hat to Ray Davies.

Peace

Lionel Richie is one of my favorites. Saw him on CMT with Kenny Rogers and some of his songs are awsome.

Wouldn't be able to sleep tonight if I didn't mention Dylan and Robertson first.

But then I think George Harrison ought to be on the list as well.

Did anyone mention Ray Davies?

From the list I would go with Lennon and McCartney. I like a lot of Roger Waters' lyrics. Current artist I would pick would be Chad Kroeger.

I had to vote for Mr. Lennon.
I don't think he was the best songwriter in the world but he was certainly different.
He is however my personal favourite.

Be excellent to each other & party on dudes!

You'll have me blushing Hilch.....I agree there are some really talented songwriters, not just in the SSG but the Songwriter's Forum as well....

From the list, I voted for Dylan - no-one can tell a story quite like him...

Surprised no-one has mentioned Van Morrison yet.....

Others who spring to mind are John Fogerty, Lou Reed, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Buddy Holly, David Bowie, Carole King, another Motown team - Ashford and Simpson, Nick Lowe, Gerry Rafferty, Ray Davies, Robert Johnson, Cat Stevens......

pause for breath....

Rodgers and Hammerstein, Noel Coward, Cole Porter, Smokey Robinson, Roy Orbison, Joan Baez, the Gibb Brothers, Nick Cave, Chuck Berry, Elton John & Bernie Taupin, Alanis Morrisette, Cheryl Crow, Jim Steinman.....

Enough to be going on with I think....

:D :D :D
