How does it work when you go to a concert and the band plays a cover tune :?: I think half of the big name shows I've seen, at some point the band will play a cover tune. Does that band being covered get comped? Does that fall into what Nick covered, er, talked about.

This whole issue is making my head spin :? . I need a beer. Too bad for me I"m at work

Same deal. The venue owner or promoter is responsible for licensing the music. Most places that have live music regularly buy an annual license from each of the agencies... that'll cover anything anybody plays.

The agencies then use formulas to figure out who gets what share of the total pot.

The system isn't perfect - it overly rewards the top acts, and underpays new artists, but at least in theory everyone gets compensated.

didn't the riaa corp lawyers get a deal with the blank disc manufacturers?
i thought i read somewhere that they had to pay a couple cents per disc to the recording industry.
if that's true it's quite a scam.
i mean, how do they know what the discs will be used for?

Yep. They get a piece of the action on blank recording media and recording devices.

so.... pretty much all I'm putting on CDR's is my own stuff that I record, and stuff from a few of my buds from GN, so where is our cut  :P

One thing I think most of us can agree on is copyright/IP laws in this country need to change.

Amen. And that's really the point I was trying to make. And I didn't mean to suggest that you had done anything wrong playing a cover song, I was trying to point out how confusing and convoluted the current system is.

Well, Powertabs and Mysongbook have currently stopped uploads and downloads (before I had a chance to hoard  ).

How much revenue do tab books make anyway. I can't recall any muscian actively going on a show to say "Well, My new tab book is coming out next week so I'm doing a lot of publicity for that launch..." Do musicans give a toss about tab books? What would trouble me more: finding my new album available to dowload free on the internet or someone's effort of transcribing my guitar chords I used in a particular song?

What about the knock on effect to the guitar manufacture / selling industry? How many people's interest in the guitar is piqued and they go out and buy a guitar soley because they have access to free guitar tabs on the internet.

Will this have implications for the Easy Song forum?

Mysongbook is still working, and with as many pop-ups, they should be able to fight the MPA for many years!!!

Nick has taken a step in that direction. He has locked it down to only registered members. There-fore "outsides" aren't allowed to view it.

Btw, nice move Nick. I still want to know about the Home page though!!!

I think a lot of people have been overreacting. Self-censorship is a bad thing and seeing websites close without even receving a legal challenge is not a good sign of things to come. I own a few music web sites, so seeing in the news that they are seeking jail time for web site owners does get my attention. But I'm not stocking up on canned goods yet.

Guitar Noise has always been about guitar lessons. And since the forums came along music discussion too. We're not a tab site. We come up with our own exclusive content. I don't think this site is guilty of any thieving so I won't lose any sleep over scare tactics like "jail time."

Saw these news items yesterday...

Just curious if the question of whether guitarnoise would have Christmas lessons next year...all my lessons have been based on my own arrangements (and obviously guitarnoise has my permission to use them) and the tunes are all under public domain. I've been pretty admamant about that, as I don't want to deal with any copyright issues either.

Yeah, your lessons are cool Doug. :D
I think one problem is if things are different this time next year, it will be time consuming and very difficult to verify that all the works on the site are totally legal. I want to keep the site in the clear with copyrights but don't want to make looking over my shoulder a full time job either.

BTW, I removed my comment about next year's Christmas lessons. I guess I put that in for shock value and it wasn't really necessary.
