I forgot to mention Krautrock ,in other words the german rock wave that was so popular in the 70's with groups such as:
Kraftwerk: the pionners in techno music.
Neu.
Faust.

Some few parts are sung but overall the music is really essential.
And if you like ambient music I recommend the guy that started it all : Brian Eno.
Another good source of instrumental music can be soundtracks, from movies and television shows in particular. I don't recall the artist's name, but the Twin Peaks soundtrack got a lot of play when the show was out and still gets fairly regular rotation in my CD player.
And a lot of my younger students like things like the themes from The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Mission: Impossible, The Pink Panther and other shows or movies
Peace

Angelo Badalamenti scored Twin Peaks and most of David Lynch's movies. If you like him, you'd probably like Nino Rota, who scored most of Fellini's movies.
Don
I'd second Tangerine Dream, and add Blue Man Group, Yeah those guys from the Intel commercials I have two of their albums and they kick it!!
Chuck Norris invented Kentucky Fried Chicken's famous secret recipe, with eleven herbs and spices. But nobody ever mentions the twelfth ingredient: Fear!
