i opted to make a video and some stills of all my gear, and included a hard-copy (paper) list with all the serial numbers itemized.
my policy provides for "replacement cost" so make sure you know exactly what your specific terms are, or you may end up with a severely depreciated amount for your stuff in the event of fire or theft.
