A couple of weeks ago, smoking dog posted that he had a myspace page. This prompted me to mention that I have one as well. Since then I've gotten friend requests from a couple of other GN members. So, how many other GN'ers are on myspace?

If anyone is interested I'm at http://www.myspace.com/rvrowe

Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.

Speaking of mySpace... I saw that post from Smoking Dog and I went onto MySpace as a result. I then tried to set up my own page.

Am I crazy or is that the most difficult site to use? It seems like there was no thought to the site design and they just added new things as they became available without any idea of how a user would actually use the site... plus a TON of advertisements. I was very disappointed.

Was I doing something wrong? Is there a particular way to set things up that is much easier? It seems like you have to know HTML and stuff to set up the page.

This is as far as I got.

Plus, my wife didn seem so keen on me getting daily emails from women asking to be my "friend."

It might be just me, but I find MySpace page very ugly and cluttered. Morever, it takes a lot of time to load. And finally the computer freezes.

I have a soundclick page which is relatively less obnoxious -

The MySpace advantage: It's where you will find every level of musician from amateur to famous to famous+talented pro. So there really is quite an active music culture at 'Space despite the questionable generic page UI and difficulty for some in page customization. If you do gig, it is very easy to send bulletins to your friends and keep them up on your schedule.

As for those bogus "friend" requests -- well 95% go away after a week as the administrators find and kill them.

However, I cannot post any cover songs there, as I can on Soundclick. Plus in the free account, I can post only upto four songs. On soundclick, as far as I know, there is no limit of posting songs even in a free account. (I have seen some people having 200 and more songs on the free soundclick page )

I know the MySpace revolution is happening. I get the fortune magazine and one whole issue was devoted to it.

Seems like I should go and make my page. Will try to... :sigh:

Myspace is initially a pain in the hind end to set up, but once done it is easy to use. It is a great networking tool for meeting musicians in your area. It is not meant to be a storage space for music like soundclick, it is set up so you can put up a sampling of your sound.
Yes you can post covers. All of the stuff I have posted is covers.
I've gotten invited to jams and gotten a couple of offers to do some studio work from local people seeing my page.
Myspace is first and foremost a networking site not a place to store music

Our band Twist of Fate has a MySpace page started by our singer Lee. I am not too crazy about it. For one thing, he writes long run-on sentences without proper punctuation. I dunno, I just like to appear literate. We have a few samples too, not nearly our best.

I don't like all the freaks that post on the site, we've had to remove porn a few times. But I really don't manage the site, Lee does.

Rahul,
I was concerned about uploading covers so I sent myspace a message
You can upload covers as long as it does not contain any of the original recording in it see below:
Hello,

You can upload a cover song as long as it does not include any of the original recording.

Thanks!

Body:

Not wanting to infringe on anybodys copyright, what is the
MySpace position with regard to uploading my own version of
another artists song (i.e. a cover) ? There does not appear to
be a facility to give the original artist the due credit.

Thanks
