I didn't know exactly where to post this, but I just started listening to Neil Young a few days ago. I bought the Harvest album after reading about it somewhere and I am amazed by it. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on which of his CD's to buy next?? I don't like buying best of cd's because they never mesh very well when i listen to them.

Oh, and i just ordered the Heart Of Gold DVD but haven't watched it yet. Hope some of you have suggestions. Thanks.

Neil Young has gone through quite a journey as an artist/musician. he has kept his finger on the pulse of what is going on and wrote songs about that. so his albums change in flavor. what you hear on Harvest you may not expect to hear on Sleeps With Angels.

I loved his early years. all the heartbreak songs etc. I liked his pedal steel stuff too. Harvest covers some of that.
I like best his rocking stuff with his band Crazy Horse.
if you want extended guitar breaks and controlled feedback and strong lyrics then get the double CD Weld. it is killer.
Sleeps With Angels is good.
Greendale I like but it isnt for everyone.
Freedom is a live album. it has its intimate moments and it also rocks hard.

but my all time fav is Weld. Cortez the Killer and Powderfinger blow me away.

I'm with Dogbite. Weld is awesome.

I have been a NY fan since the days of Buffalo Springfield.
My dad had their albums and was a fan of CSN&Y so i was exposed early.
When they (BS) broke up Richie Furay and Jim Messina formed POCO (with Rusty Young) that was the first concert i attended.

i think you should take the journey of the albums in chronological order. there will be stuff you aren't wild about but you will also discover hidden gems that didn't get much airplay.

David Hodge has some great NY lessons here that i recommend highly. i also highly recommend the Harvest DVD.

I'll definetly check out the weld album and may purchase some of the early Buffalo Springfield. I looked him up on Wikipedia and there were so many albums and style changes I didn't know where to start. Thanks guys.

ak you are going to enjoy exploring Neil Young's discography. it is huge.
some things are great and some I can leave.
two early NY I have :
'After the Goldrush' and 'Every Knows This is Nowhere'.
they come from post Buffalo Springfield. the cut ,Cowgirl In the Sand, is classic.
if you like Weld check out Ragged Glory; same band line up but in a studio.

I need more NY.

Get "Harvest Moon" recorded many years after "Harvest" absolutely packed with great songs! Neil at his all time best I think.
I know I keep going on about this album on various forums on GN but it really is that good.

The guitar is all right John but you'll never make a living out of it! (John Lennon's Aunt Mimi)

get the live rust dvd, you won't regret

starts of with some nice accoustic songs and then turns around into neil's full of emotion electric guitar playing. Each song will one by one become your favourite.

For those of you who get VH1 on their BBC Crown Jewels series this month they have a Neil Young concert, it's pretty funny cause he talks about "New songs" he wrote while on this tour that he is going to play for the audience. The new tunes turn out to be Old Man and Heart of Gold

Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.
