Anyone read this weeks issue of New Scientist? There's a really interesting report on music, why it affects us the way it does, whether our response is instinctive or learned, and whether we are the only creatures who 'hear' sounds as music rather than as just individual sounds.. worth a read.

whether we are the only creatures who 'hear' sounds as music rather than as just individual sounds.. Dunno, but some other animals sure seem to be fascinated by it. I've had hummingbirds come hover in front of me checking me out when playing slide outside. Used to have a chinchilla who'd hide inside the foldout couch, and the only way I could get him out was to break out the reso and bottleneck. He'd run right out and stand up in front of me, listening intently. I've even got a water turtle in a tank in the basement who'll stand up, stick his head out and pay attention to slide guitar music. My daughter's baby tortoise seems to like it, too. He'll crawl over and get between my feet when I play. The cats, OTOH, give me a disgusted look and leave. Can't please everyone...

Oh, yeah: Watch this video and tell me this bird's only hearing music as individual sounds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGJaz64lrJ4

My daughter's budgie loves "music." For example, the worse my banjo playing, the more he sings. He also like screeching violin, good or bad mando and acoustic slide ... anything with lots of attack and/or harmonics.

my pet bird enjoyed my playing. she sat very close to the gutiar and sometimes bit on a vibbrating string. she always bit the wrong fret. I guess she didnt know intervals.
I belive animals have more than an ear for music. birds, whales, etc..experiement with varitations of their songs.
music, like rythmic drums is a very early form of communication with humans. language came second.

so long drum solos were the rage I bet.

My father always got our dog singing by playing the harmonica, but I always thought he was singing becasue it hurt his ears, but I wasn't for sure. I did hear on the radio that some company came out with a CD of music that only dogs can hear. They did some big research on what songs the dogs like the most and made a CD of it.

I've got blisters on my fingers. ~Ringo Starr

One of my cats likes to come up and pluck the strings of my acoustic while I'm playing. He doesn't care for electric, though!

:( Of course the article isn't online yet - but I found this nifty bonus article on auditory illusions:

Sure, animals like music, especially birds - my #1 favorite audience lol. I THINK the dog likes my guitar playing but he sure doesn't "get" dancing yet

What if the Hokey Pokey IS what it's really all about?
