My wife and I were discussing the other day Funeral songs and I came up with,
All Things Must Pass by George Harrison
And she came up with
Flower On The Water By John Williamson (an Australian balladeer) Look here for previews to some of his songs...
http://www.malleeboy.com/html/music.html

Some of my favourites... (Flower on the Water is not here)
True Blue (Defacto Australian National Anthem)
Galleries Of Pink Gallahs
Cootumundra Wattle
Mallee Boy
Wrinkles (Always brings a tear to my eye lol)
Waltzing Matilda (Also a defacto Australian National Anthem not written by John but a great rendition)
Cracker Night (many great childhood memories in this song)

Any way I digress , your choice of Funeral songs would be....

Cheers
Keith

I know a little bit about a lot of things, but not a lot about anything...
Looking for people to jam with in Sydney Oz.......

Monty Python's Always Look on the Bright Side of Life. Every word of it sums up my attitude to life and death and I'd rather remind the rellies of that than encourage them to wallow in grief, I can't think of anything more fitting. Maybe I'll write something that says the same kind of thing in my own words at some point, that's an idea that's struck me a few times now.

that song by Bread, I forget the name, had been a popular wedding song in the past.
at a friends funeral a few years ago someone played it.
it worked. later I learned it was it was the deceased idea.
he was a very far out guy.

at my brothers funeral in 06 we played some Irish works. flute, fiddle, drum. I forget which artists.

music is so very important in our lives. weddings and funerals and parties. they would not be the same without it.

for my pops I chose Jeff Buckley doing Satisfied Mind - really summed up my pops' attitude to life and helped people remember that rather than wallow in grief. I also chose Chris Whitley's Dirt Floor (off the album of the same name). I figured they were musically in-keeping with what he would have liked and said the kind of stuff he would have agreed with.

Pearl Jam's Light Years (off Binaural) is another one which realy gets how rellies and friends of the deceased often feel. I forgot about that one at the time, but hae listened to it a lot since.

Personally, I'd be tempted to go with Hendrix doing Fire, if I get cremated. Or Warren Zevon's My Ride is Here (How he did that last album so amusingly, I'll never comprehend). But I might opt for my own tune, Morning Bell (hey, if you've got a captive audience, why not.....j/p)

Smokey Robinson's "Really Gonna Miss You". It's a beautiful song! Here are the lyrics.....
Really gonna miss you
Its really gonna be different without you
Time came when you had to go
For the rest of my life
Gonna be thinking about you (yes I am)

I'll miss you my buddy
I'll miss you my friend
I promise my love for you will never end

In your finest hour I was there with you
And without you things wont be the same
But there's a higher power that we answer to
And you heard Him calling your name

Really gonna miss you
Everything about you your smiling face
I know you want us all to be strong

Really gonna miss you
I know your going to that magic place
Singing you a brand new song

I'll miss you my buddy
I'll miss you my friend
I promise my love for you will never end

Really Gonna Miss You

And, of course, "Will The Circle Be Unbroken".

ya got me posting lyrics now, too! lol - thought some folks might like this one and may not have heard it before....

"Light Years"

i've used hammers made out of wood
i have played games with pieces and rules
i undeciphered tricks at the bar
but now you're gone, i haven't figured out why
i've come up with riddles and jokes about war
i've figured out numbers and what they're for
i've understood feelings and i've understood words
but how could you be taken away?

and wherever you've gone
and wherever we might go
it don't seem fair...today just disappeared
your light's reflected now, reflected from afar
we were but stones, your light made us stars

with heavy breath, awakened regrets
back pages and days alone that could have been spent, together..
but we were miles apart
every inch between us becomes light years now
no time to be void or save up on life
you got to spend it all..

and wherever you've gone
and wherever we might go
it don't seem fair...you seemed to like it here
your light's reflected now, reflected from afar
we were but stones, your light made us stars
and wherever you've gone
and wherever we might go
it don't seem fair...today just disappeared
your light's reflected now, reflected from afar
we were but stones, your light made us stars

I'll have to tell my wife to get my old guitar teacher to play his slide version of Amazing Grace, I love it. I play a pretty close derivative of his version. Another great favorite of mine is It Is Well With My Soul, which I've been meaning for a long time to come up with a slide version of. When I do, I'll have to make sure my teacher learns it, too. (He's a lot younger than I am, I expect he'll be around.)

Oh yeah, he and I used to play a nice Open G slide version of I'll Fly Away. That'd be another good one. :D

'black dress' by 'kisschasy' is the most beautiful song about death i know. but i dont know if its suitable for this scenario...the lyrics are not so nice (on their own) but when he sings them its a beautiful balled about not understanding that they are gone. and fighting against it: "i made my mind up last night, that heaven just cant have you"

the song will give you goosebumps

I always thought "Comfortably Numb" would be appropriate.

Falling in love is like learning to play the guitar; first you learn to follow the rules, then you learn to play with your heart.

Anything by the Grateful Dead!

He's Gone "like a steam locomotive ... rolling down the track"

The Other One "Cowboy Neil at the wheel of the bus to Never-Ever Land .... comin around y'all - COMIN AROUND"

Cassidy "quick beats in an icy heart, catch-colt draws a coffin cart"

Estimated Prophet "firewheel burnin in the air - see it rise before me"

Bird Song "anyone who sings so sweet is surely passing by... don't you cry, dry your eyes on the wind"

Attics of My Life "when there were no songs to sing, You sang to me"

What if the Hokey Pokey IS what it's really all about?

How about another song called Fire by Arthur Brown? If you're leaving behind anyone religious they might get a bit too worried about the lyrics though. The Hendrix one is more of a love song. Arthur Brown was a bit of nutjob. I understand (I'm far too young to know this personally) that for this song he would come out on stage with a hat that had jets of flame coming out of the top.

I am the god of hell fire, and I bring you
Fire, I'll take you to burn
Fire, I'll take you to learn
I'll see you burn

You fought hard and you saved and earned
But all of it's going to burn
And your mind, your tiny mind
You know you've really been so blind
Now 's your time, burn your mind
You're falling far too far behind
Oh no, oh no, oh no, you're gonna burn

Fire, to destroy all you've done
Fire, to end all you've become
I'll feel you burn

You've been living like a little girl
In the middle of your little world
And your mind, your tiny mind
You know you've really been so blind
Now 's your time, burn your mind
You're falling far too far behind
OOhhh
Fire, I'll take you to burn
Fire, I'll take you to learn
You're gonna burn, you're gonna burn
You're gonna burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn

Fire, I'll take you to burn
Fire, I'll take you to learn
Fire, I'll take you to bed

P.S. Yeah, I've been away for a while (work, home, some family medical issues, etc.) but I've been back for about a week or so reading and trying to catch up.

I always thought Harrison's "Pisces Fish" would be good at my funeral:

Old ladies, who must be doggie training
Walking, throwing balls, chasing all the sheep
While the farmer stands around, and hes complaining
His mad cows are being put to sleep
Im a Pisces fish and the river runs through my soul

Smoke signals from the brewery
Like someone in there found the latest Pope
In a vat of beer that keeps pumping out with fury
While the church bell ringers trangled in his rope

But theres a temple on an island
I think of all the Gods and what they feel
You can only find them in the deepest silence
Ive got to get off of this big wheel

Im a Pisces fish and the river runs through my soul
Im a Pisces fish and the river runs through my soul

And Ill be swimming until I can find those waters
Thats the one unbounded ocean of bliss
Thats flowing through your parents, sons and daughters
But still an easy thing for us to miss

Blades go skimming through the water
I hear the coxon shouting his instructions about
With this crew oh, it could be a tall order
Have we time to sort all these things out ?

Sometimes my life it feels like fiction
Some of the days its really quite serene
Im a living proof of all lifes contradictions
One halfs going where the other halfs just been

And Im a Pisces fish and the river runs through my soul
Im a Pisces fish and the river runs through my soul
Im a Pisces fish and the river runs through my soul

Well we all shine on--like the moon and the stars and the sun.
-- John Lennon
