hey ohblahitsme, no worries, you are more than welcome.

Don't spend too much time looking at buying new software if money is tight, Cubase LE will do the job initially and you'll get the hang of it soon enough, there are lots of forums and websites out there that provide help.

Have a look at this site http://www.wavosaur.com/vst/distortion-plugins.php , it has a few free Distortion VST plug-ins available for download. As I said earlier, there is lots of freeware stuff out there. This one http://www.wavosaur.com/vst/amp-sim-plugins.php has a freeware has a whole free guitarsuite package available, with 7 effects. That's all you probably need to start out with.

yeah. dip your toes. keep it simple. the sound quality of the recordings on that freebie, Cubase LE, is really surprising.
there's tons of tools inside to get to know. when I first began some of the most basic things kept me busy for days and happy for hours. you can always upgrade for reduced costs within the Steinberg (Cubase) product.
if you think you had GAS for guitars, oh man, recording gear catalogs and the prices are killer. 8)

Wow you guys are great. I will definitely check those sites out and I might look at Cakewalk- the only problem is, after buying this and a mic, I have almost no money left. I will save up though(only a student)

Once again thanks for the great replies.
I am no longer a student, but recording gear is expensive. I use the low price range, read: affordable, and I get pretty good results.
things that will imprrove the quality will be mikes, mike preamp, and mastering software.

I know how I work. I like to start things simple. that way I get a good understanding before I add bells, whistles and more software.
