Who do you all think are great song writers, from a lyrical standpoint.
I think that Roger Waters is a great one, so is Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl.
I'll probably think of more
"The Beauty of Music is my Sanity. Without it, I would simply lose my gravity, and blow away with the breeze." - Ness K(Aka Matt Harris)
Leonard Cohen, Syd Barrett, Thom Yorke, Frank Zappa, Suzanne Vega.
There are a lot of fine songwriters on the songwriting boards on this very site - you could do worse than check some of them out.
In no particular order:
Katreich, Celt, Straycat, Chefie, Dhodge, Pbee, CitiZenNoir, CCourtney, ChrisC, BarnabusRox (not a great lyricist, but a great trier!) Pearlthekat, lwj001, Coleclark, A Beautiful Disaster, Kchambers, JWMartin and others whose names escape me for the moment. There are others who used to be around but seem to have disappeared, like Marvelous Optimist and Scratchmonkey.
They're just a few names off the top of my head - apologies for anyone I've forgotten.

Falling in love is like learning to play the guitar; first you learn to follow the rules, then you learn to play with your heart.
For starters:
John Prine
John Hiatt
Paul McCartney, John Lennon
Bob Dylan
Mary Chapin Carpenter
Neil Young
Paul Simon
The Roches

Joe Strummer

Elvis Costello
David Crowder
Brian WIlson

For lyrics, I tend to like the head scratching variety, so:
Becker/Fagen
Randy Newman
Townes Van Zandt
with +'s for Leonard Cohen and John Fogerty.

Dylan, Tom Waits and Robbie Robertson

Hi,
Tom Waits is #1 for me. He can do anything from touching ballads to crazy stuff. A real master craftsman at what he does.
I also like Randy Newman, Tom Lehrer and those who can do smart thought provoking stuff.
And on their good days, I can't go past Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen for the pictures that they can paint. I especially like Bob Dylan because when he's good he's absolutely brilliant, but he can be fairly dire too. To roughly quote something that Nick said here somewhere "If you want to see great lyrics you can't go past Bob Dylan. If you want to see bad lyrics you can't go past Bob Dylan...". So on his good days he inspires me, and on his bad days he gives me hope that my own songwriting might eventually get somewhere too...
But like Vic says, I've enjoyed some good songs from the locals here at GN too.
Chris
Thanks Vic for the mention on your list.
You've been known to turn a phrase or two yourself.
Other than Vic and the names he mentioned
John Prine (No surprise to many around here that he's #1)
John Lennon
John Hiatt
It's purely coincidence that they and I all share the same name.
