Just wondering whether you read tab or notation. Click an option on the poll and we shall see what the ratio is.

For me its got to be tab, I think you need an inigma machine to decode notation, although I am able to follow the timing side of things on notation. Its just all those little dots !!!

Be excellent to each other & party on dudes!

I picked tab. I CAN read notation, but not very well, takes me some time.

We had a long discussion about the pro's and cons of both methods very recently.

I learned to read notation when I was six - read the other thread for the details - so though I can play from Tab, I play from notation 99% of the time.

You should probably have a "both" option and a "neither" option.

They really convey two different things. TAB shows you fingerings and you infer music; standard notation shows you music and you figure out fingerings.

i played french horn in gradeskrewl but it didn' take

i guess i am learning all over again since i'm teaching my kids keyboards (barely staying one page of the book ahead.)

i prefer tabs for guitar if i already know the tune because it gets me goin quicker even if it's not entirely accurate. quess i'm kinda lazy
does that make sence?

Paul's right -- without the options for "both" and "neither", the results won't tell you much.

I can read music decently, but I won't lie, I use TAB alot more, I like how notation has rhythm compared to TAB which only has it on occasion.

Haven't used tab at all lately, and only used a tiny bit of sheet music. Guess that means I need to get my lazy butt into gear and do something. :D

if you use tab with rhythm notation you can usually sight read relatively easily...

sight reading standard notation for a guitar is mind boggling!

i tend to use tab although i can read notation.

This signature is a forgery.

Sight reading guitar gets pretty easy over time.

You look at the key signature, you know what the chords are. Unless you see an accidental popping up you don't need to think, "wait what notes are all those notes". You just know that that is a C chord.

think about this, when you see the line below, do you look at the numbers on the tab, the little black dots in the chord diagram, or just the letter name? Well when you sight read music you simply learn the image of the chord shape, along with the root, and a knowledge of what should be there automatically.

Something I saw BB King say in an online lesson (someone posted the link on this forum): "Learn to read. I didn't learn it well, but you can learn it."
