Hi,
Most popular modern music is forgettable and completely disposable. It's 'McMusic' of no great merit that can be consumed and then tossed aside. :(
This sounds like the standard old fart view, but it's true. And it's true because it's always been true.
Some of us can get nostalgic about the popular songs of the 50s, 60s or 70s but if you can dig up play lists of the era it's easy to see that most of that was completely forgettable too. It's just that it was 'our' junk. Sure, a few songs have stood the test of time - but if you're honest about it many of them only survive because they bring up memories of good times when you were young, not because of any great musical merit. And a far greater numbers of songs from those times have been mercifully forgotten.
One of the good things about getting old is that I can now sift through the 'crap' of any generation and find some good stuff - ancient or modern. Even that awful old rubbish my parents used to listen to turns out to have had some good songs in there, and some musicians who really knew how to perfom them too.
I try to enjoy as much as I can, but I don't expect a high hit rate of genuinely good stuff in any style or era. :)
Cheers,
Chris
great reply as always chris....think you said same as me but far more concisely
I don't think I said the same, but I'll sure agree! :D

If you can listen to as much different stuff as possible, you'll be just fine

+1 on Chris's point. I had a lot of collections (nee albums) from the 70s/80s/90s. I only listen to 5% of the stuff of which I once thought highly enough to buy.

You haven't met my boys have you?
It's 'McMusic'...
I've not heard that expression before. Just about sums it up though.

Tough choice, don't like any of them. I like punk but don't like Green Day with the exception of a couple songs Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Longview.
'Favourite' and 'best' are completely different concepts, but it's a distinction lost on the young'uns.

Well, none of them played Punk, so you're actually comparing apples with oranges. Hendrix didn't even have the benefit of modern amps, pickups, stompboxes, modelling systems or pro tools; you have to compare like with like - would Jimmy Page stand up well against Dimebag Darrell, and who would win battle of the bands between Eric Clapton and Peter Green?

I think Joe Strummer appears in this movie .
Ha... what a great thread. In my area (central Connecticut) there is NO Modern ROck radio station. Strange as that may be... It is true! There is a hard rock station that plays AC/DC, Ozzy, and then some newer "metalish" bands that scream like they are inagony. Strangly enough, they don't play "classic metal" like Judas Priest or Iron Maiden... Other than that we are surrounded by Classic Rock and pop music. I love classic rock, but the music played by most of those stations tends to be "safe" classic rock and nothing too hard. Conversely, that other station I mentioned plays up the hi-hop/metal/rap/thrash stuff and doesn't cater to any Modern Rock.
Luckily, I have DISH network and I get Sirius radio on my home tv. I listen to Alt Nation, mostly, and I've found a number of bands that I really like:
-Snow Patrol
-Muse
-Killers
-Dredg
-My Chemical Romance
-White Stripes
-Jet
-Death Cab for Cutie
Etc, etc... yeah, most would be considered fairly mainstream "pop rock" I guess, but I did the simply "chug chug" of the chords and most of the singers have decent voices and actually sing.
I prefer my stand-by bands (Maiden, Rush) but I like to listen to new music, so these bands are what I'm into right now. On the plus side, as a guitar-player most of these songs are pretty easy to learn!
