Just thought I'd throw in an all girl punk band.

I bet ya, Britt Black is embarrassed that people are still watching that. Hasn't her Dad created another band for her yet?

I checked out VH1 and Fuse the other day and had no idea who the bands in the videos are besides RHCP. Modern rock for me was when grunge was big in the '90's. When I think of punk it's The Sex Pistols, Ramones, Black Flag, L7, Lunachicks, Misfits, and Rollins Band(?).

If you like The Flaming Lips, be sure to check out the film about them, Fearless Freaks.

Their street cred was obliterated when Gordon Brown (the UK finance minister) said he liked them. I'd be surprised if they recovered from that.

Ha... what a great thread. In my area (central Connecticut) there is NO Modern ROck radio station.

I don't know if their licences allow them to broadcast into the US, even online, but check out two UK stations:

http://www.kerrang.com/

Follow the link to Kerrang Radio - life is loud

http://www.planetrock.com/

Tony Iommi presents a show on Sunday afternoon, and some reprobate called Alice Cooper presents the breakfast show

UK listeners can pick up both stations on DAB (digital radiio)

Best,

A :-)

Hmm.... I always feel like there is lots of good music I am missing out on and yet can never find it. I think I am a picky listener. What constitutes modern rock? Artists of recent years that I listen to:

System of a Down
Nina Nastasia
Mars Volta

People I sort of listen to:

White Stripes (of all the bands rehashing classic rock, they are the best even over Mars Volta, although I listen to them way more)
The Killers
My favourite modern rock bands are Alter Bridge and Disturbed.
My favourite punk bands are Nirvana and The Offspring.

I could never get into classic rock. It never really spoke to me. Hendrix, Page, Clapton, never liked them. Hendrix I can watch him play because he has a lot of stage presence but can't stand listening to him. But his stage presence still doesn't top Kurt Cobain jumping from his amp into the drumkit. I've yet to hear all of Stairway to Heaven. I can never get more than 3 minutes into the song before I put something else on. I covered Sunshine of Your Love by Cream, but I've never heard the song. Not saying they're bad, they just don't do anything for me. Could be I just wasn't around when they were popular.
I wasn't around when the those bands were popular either. I can respect what you say because Clapton, while I respect him immensely and agree he has great music, it doesn't do much for me. However, I am a HUGE Led Zeppelin fan and if Stairway to Heaven is the Zep song you are listening to, no wonder you don't really like it. Stairway, IMO is the worst Zeppelin song and I never listen to it. You should try listen to other songs than the standard one's everyone knows by Hendrix, Clapton (and his bands), or Page, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Nice thread. In my view the nice thing about punk is the following:

By definition punk is beyond definition.

So it's no surprise that there are bands in this thread that most would not consider punk. For instance, Television. Most early punk bands that mattered will say one way or another Television was an influence. But it's hard to say that they are (the band has not officially dissolved if i am not mistaken) a punk band.

This in my opinion is what makes talking about punk music fun. If it's punk to you, then it's punk :)

My favorites are:

New Model Army , The World/Inferno Friendship Society, Pixies, Fugazi, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Against Me!, Television, "Defiance, Ohio", Throwing Muses, Dead Kennedys, The Mars Volta, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cake etc :)

Cheers.

For real punk and guitar you have to look at the oldies.

Black Flag, Angry Samoans, The Minute Men, Circle Jerks....classic punk

Punk, to me, is not as much a genre defined by the sounds but by the attitude. Punk music to me is energetic music with a strong disregard for authority, the guts to speak freely and directly, the willingness to stand up for what it is right and the intend of being heared loud and clearly. I don't care much whether you play punk on an electric guitar or trombone. I'd say 'Ode to joy' is punk.

Ode to Joy Punk Rock? :D That's becuase Beethoven was a total rock star. Just think of the intro to his fifth symphony, if that isn't hard rock, then what is?? I find a lot of times the main difference between modern music and classical is instrumentation and the lack of distortion. Bringing this back to modern rock/punk, I often wonder what they would think of modern music. I think Beethoven would be a hard rock maybe even metal head - favorite artist of today, White Stripes. Chopin would be more of a blues guy and today's favorite artist - tough one, maybe Norah Jones. Mozart would be a Beatles man, favorite artist of today - John Mayer.

well, in a way expressing the idea that individuals have the right to experience joy is quite something in a time when people were supposed to just get rid of their sin of being born and die without whining too much.

Well, the whole 'overdrive' thing definitely came from accoustic instruments. Listen to a piano very softly and very hard, you'll hear a massive change of timbre very much like a guitar overdrives. Same with cellos, they go from smooth to very harsh and aggressive. Which is, I think, why most people who like blues also somewhat appreciate the sound of this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=S6yuR8efotI What I'd call the main difference is that modern music is chord-driven whereas classical music is melody-driven.

Anyway, in my mijn mind Beethoven would be Radiohead, pushing things forward to the edge of contemporary popular taste with electronical stuff. Mozart would probably have been a Shawn Lane if I had to guess. :P

From reading old plays and books, I think people had a little more joy then you give them credit for. Perhaps, Beethoven is just so bold as to have stated it when people were pretending that they lived just to shave off sin and therefore punk rock.

I never thought of it that way, the overdrive stuff. I do love stringed instruments just for what you mention. Banging on the piano. A violin can be so beautiful and when played harshly, well the best word I can describe it to be is raunchy. For this, I always thought of the violin as a good blues/rock instrument. (I know the guy in the video is playing a cello.) Never related it to distortion. Beethoven probably would have loved electronic overdrive.

Hmm.. I am not too familiar with modern music to come up with anything too creative for the classical greats. Radiohead is a good choice but slightly cheating. Their first album came out more than ten years ago but they are still making music and still relevant to today. I have to go look up who shawn lane is  . As for Bach.... I'll have to think about it.

hehe, sorry, I wasn't suggesting people didn't have fun back then, it's indeed about openly saying that life is just as much about experiencing joy (with religious joy being the main theme) as anything else. It all depends on your own interpretation, but that period, to me, is part of the century-long process of individualisation which led us all the way to today, where openly having ambitions and striving for happiness is considered normal and sane. Ofcourse, I don't know if Beethoven would agree with me on any of this. :)
