Ok, we have a lot of geezers on this board who listen to old stuff like Elvis, the Beatles, The Who, Rush, Iron Maiden, CSNY, Jazz, The Blues, Metallica, Guns n' Roses... what new stuff are you listening to right now? It doesn't have to be a new artist or young band, but the material should be relatively recent (last 4 years). Maybe your post will inspire others to check out your new find.

Currently, I'm still listening to the My Chemical Romance recent release (Black Parade), the new Rush disc (Snakes and Arrows), and the newer Killers album. I must admit that I'm also morbidly interested in the new Avril Lavinge... I don't know why.

My favorite new album lately is Lily Allen's "Alright Still". She's got a cute voice and I dig her style. That's been out a while though, my favorite new releases right now are Ween's "Friends EP" and They Might Be Giants' "The Else".

Especially the Ween album--usually a terrific guitar band, the album opens with an Erasure/Pet Shop Boys-style synth anthem and goes through a number of other styles before it's through. Ween always experiment with genres and this new EP is no different. Very catchy.

This is the really newer stuff (not the new to me but older music).

Don Byron - Ivey Divey

Charlie Hunter - Steady Groovin'
http://www.amazon.com/Steady-Groovin-Charlie-Hunter/dp/B0007TKH84
He plays a rather cool 8 string guitar - 5 high strings as guitar and the 3 low strings as a bass.

He has lots of free music available on his website - http://charliehunter.com

White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan

The Bees - Octopus (though they have changed their name for North America to "A Band of Bees" - probably a name conflict)

OK I'm one of those Geezers but lately I've been listening
to some newer stuff.

Mostly I've been enjoying an independent release by a local musician
and friend of ours Tony Lee Thomas

It's really good stuff and he's a really nice guy.

There are a few new bands I've listened to - Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Killers, Kooks, Paolo Nutini, Kaiser Chiefs - who sound OK, but nothing special (I hasten to add, as always, that's just MY opinion.....) - the only new band I'm really taken with so far, though, is Kasabian. They seem to have a fullness and a depth that's lacking slightly in the others.

I did, however, just treat myself to a new CD - well, actually, two CD's and a DVD - The Traveling Wilburys Collection. Well most of Volume 3 is new to me!

:D :D :D

The Derek Trucks Band - Soul Serenade. Great stuff, made about 4 years ago too. Definitly recommend it to all blues/jazz lovers.

Yeah, I'm in the geezer catergory.

And being up here in the Northwoods leaves a bit to be desired as far as NEW anything goes. (Especially music)

Mel listens to Franz Ferdinand.
I liked that Float On disc.

She listens to other new things that catch my attention, couldn't say what they all are though.

I'm not one for rap at all....
She has me appreciating that new stuff by Justin Timberlake and Eminem.
I like the production qualities of 'em a lot.

And a younger guy that I work with gave me a ride (to work) the other day when my car was in the shop and
had the Clutch disk in by CLUTCH.
Specifically a song called Spacegrass....
NOT my kinda music - I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!!

Ken

EDIT - Oh sorry, that Float On stuff was Modest Mouse.
Shows you how much I know :D

Newest thing I've put on my iPod is Queens of the Stone Age, Era Vulgaris I think. I've got Tool's Aenima, Lateralis, Opiate, & 10,000 Days in there. Rammstein's Reise, Reise, which isn't known for blistering guitar solos. I've got a bunch of newer stuff like The Dropkick Murphies that I haven't gotten around to uploading. (Missed my chance to go see them when I was at the beach, as I did Merle Haggard.) Oh yeah, can't forget Kelly Pickler. I like her CD.

I did get that Franz Ferdinand debut CD. Forgot about how recent that was. I like it. The new Linkin Park on ain't so hot IMHO.

I like the Kaiser Chiefs... good call.

In central CT we have ZERO "new music" radio stations. I was out of orbit for about 3 years until I got Sirius Satellite radio... thanks God. I'm a little more plugged in than before.

There is a program in the Spanish radio which gives news on new stuff and new bands, local and international, rock, jazz, blues, alternative... Usually I listen it. (They radio station also include some programs for "geezers" so I'm also learning "new" stuff from the 60's and early 70's, unknown era for me.) Some examples:

- James Morrison - You give me something (Ok, it is not new, but I discoverd him in this way).
- Ian Parker - Your Love Is My Home.

Also I try to learn new musical gear when I travel to other countries. I always buy several CD's and DVD's (as many as possible on depending if I travel on the car, plane...). I discovered the fado in my visit to Porto two years ago. The fadistas (fado singers) say if you don't cry when you listen a fado then it is not well singed.

- Rui Veloso - Fado do Ladrão Enamorado. O Rui, o pai do rock português, the father of the Portuguese rock (see my avatar). Althought this is a fado, he is really a bluesman (if you see the video, you will see a great improvisation).
- Mariza - Ó Gente da Minha Terra. This is fado. Mariza is one of the new voices in Portugal. There are several new young fadistas there and probably Mariza is the best internationally known. BTW, Mariza sings well the fados...

And, I don't know if it could be included, but I always follow the new recordings of my favorite artists/bands:

- Manolo García - Fragua de los cuatro vientos.
- Scorpions - Humanity.

I always try to listen new music as possible (yesterday I was asking for Rodrigo y Gabriela). All styles of music but salsa, rumba, sevillanas, reggaeton and hip-hop. Sorry, they are not for me.

I wonder how many good local, not internationallly available music I'm loosing... but meanwhile I enjoy with the rest! ;)

Hey Taso! That's pretty good!!! :D

I like very much the "I wish I knew" version of "Free/One"'s Lighthouse Family (which is also a version). I'll try to buy some music next week.

Great thread Dali! :D
