Seriously, I heard some where that there were guitar players in this season's American Idol, but I haven't seen anything! Was this a rumor? I know they have guitar players on AmericasRecordLabel.com, but for a site like that to hit the main stream is far away. Don't get me started on The Next Great American Band.

The reason Idol works is that there's a high proportion of the population who think they can sing despite knowing nothing about singing and more importantly, not being able to recognise singing ability or lack of (in the audience I mean - people like to watch thinking "I could do better than that"). The proportion of the people who think the same of an instrument is an order of magnitude smaller, so there's a lot of dead horse to flog with the singing before the instrument version would, if at all, be an equal prospect, let alone a better one. Basically, playing an instrument is niche when taken in the same scope as watching TV.

Check this show out. It's similar to American Idol but for instruments instead. It didn't last long due to legal issues though.

Thats much better than that other show. They don't have a nasty judge, and they encourage the musicians. I could watch that one, to bad it got canceled

In the last 2 seasons of Australian Idol, singers were encouraged to bring their instruments on stage if they played one (which most did), and also to perform their own material on free choice shows. It's not quite what you mean, but Chris Murphy in the one before last was a bit of a riff-meister, and the guy who won the last series, always performs with his Ovation acoustic.

Paul

You appear to have typed 'nasty judge' where you meant 'pantomime villian' ;)
