In 1 1/2 hour I'll be standing in front of an audience and a committee of professors to present my PhD project in order for them to judge whether I'm good enough to continue. I've been working on it for 2 years. ...sigh!

Well, to make it guitar related - I'd felt so much more comfortable with my guitar and harmonica instead of a power point presentation - funny isn't it. Maybe I should have written it in rhymes and brought a backing band... :? :? "Public Organisations' Transformation Blues"... ;)

If a Brit can make a suggestion here, you two Continentals, I believe the idiomatic reply ought to be "crepi il lupo!" (There's something about just answering "grazie" deflecting the luck, Lucam?)

In fact the exact reply should be "crepi il lupo", anyway several scientific experiments confirm that replying "grazie" does not affect the final result
Do you also know the "In cu** alla balena" reply? :D

No - I hadn't heard that one! Classic 8)

(I'll have to run that one past my daughter, who's working on her 1st album near Verona!)

Larsko,
Good luck. I'm sure you'll be fine and it will go well. The academy is still filled with so many medieval rites of passage, isn't it?
Let us know how it goes. What's your discipline?

Thanks musenfreund - yeah these are rites. I didn't have to wear a wig or anything, but still...

Well anyway things went pretty well. The committee was relatively friendly but had appropriately enough, a range of critical remarks as well.

I'll never get used to giving "lectures" I think. Only thing certain is that I'm going to be more nervous before the real PhD defense next year... It's actually not too different from performing music - you give out something personal and your are terrified that it's not well received - rather guitar than power point for me (still).

By the way I'm a political scientist studying public sector organisations at a private school of management: http://www.bi.no

Cheers - and back to more guitar related posts...
