mate any practice is practice, whether your singing scales or just songs that you like its still exercising your vocal muslces and that helps you sing better, try and sing songs that you find difficult to sing, the idea is to stretch you vocal chords in ways they arent used to, so constantly singing songs that are easy for you is really cheating yourself out of a good workout, use the easy ones as a warmup then branch out, youll find your range increases amazingly in the first few weeks, then you can work on control

Yes I believe that if you practice a lot - there is no way you can avoid improving. If you are very unsure about if you are getting the right pitches or not - a suggestion would be spend some practicing time singing with your cd player.

in addition to this... be sure to focus on listening to YOUR voice and not the singers voice on the recording (seems obvious, but many novice singers don't pay enough attention to their own voices when singing along with a cd/radio)
.. turn the volume down and see if you sound as good as when the volume is high...

Very true. A good solution to this is just to lower the volume of the cd until your own voice stand out enogh for you to make a valid judgement!
