I started playing again a year and a half ago afer a loooong hiatus. I have a real stage fright thing, with singing especially! Even when I know a recording device is on I kind of tighten up at first. I think I'm better than I've ever been, but that may not mean much... I just want some honest, objective critique please. Below are links to some Youtube vids.

I like the sound of your voice... it sounds like you really WANT to sing, which is always a nice thing! I don't necessarily think you're using it to its full potential though. You don't have any bad techniques that I can hear or see but maybe your just not testing yourself... by testing yourself you find what your bad at and then you can work on that and improve the entire of your voice.

I would recommend doing some research into resonance within vocals and trying to really push yourself out your comfort zone :).

But keep on singing, and give us some more stuff... I enjoyed it.

I would be very comfortable sitting at the bar listening to you if you were performing.
And if you were performing next week, I'd come back for another beer.

I noticed you chose songs that were in your top range.
Was that by accident or choice?
Do you have songs that show your bottom range?

Nice voice. Thanks for sharing.

It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.

Resonance within vocals huh? Yeah, I wana know more about that, if someone can give some links please do...

Thanks a lot Kenrogers2, I very much appreciate! As for the range, I'm not even sure... I like those songs and I sing em'
the way they seem right to me. I must say that I'm not technicaly trained in music at all! I have trouble tuning a guitar sometimes!! When I here songs that I like I find the tabs/chords/lyrics online, print and practice. There's a John Hiatt song, maybe lower range, that I'll try a cover on, and post in "Hear Here ".

And hey, Jersey Jack, I looked through some of your posts and heard some of your stuff, is that you playing and singing? Man, it's good! Here, have another beer..

thanks all

i'm a bad singer, and you're obviously technically talented, but you want brutal so here it is. i don't like the way you sing. i want to. it's obvious you have ability, but the music is boring pretty boy mediocre modern rock stuff and there's nothing that differentiates you from a bunch of other people that sound exactly like you. you sound like lifehouse or a half dozen other radio-friendly clones. i know you don't just wake up with a voice like that, and i can tell you practice a lot, but your choice of music was just god awfully unoriginal and uninteresting.

Hmmm... seems not only a little harsh, but perhaps uncalled for. I'm not sure he said that he wants to sound like someone else or be original or anything like that. He just asked for critique on his singing and perhaps some suggestions for improvement.

Myself, I am even a worse singer than Jason (who is not as bad as he states), so I'm really not qualified to give you advice. But I agree with Kenny that I would definitely enjoy you at a bar. Your voice has a good, natural quality to it. I wish mine did.

I only have one issue with what you say, the songs: FareWell Angelina and The Weight are "boring pretty boy mediocre modern rock stuff" ??? I think not...

i'm not sure if i should post that original thing in the other thread because he wasn't looking for brutal honesty.

wrong thread??? jeez, I hope jasonbrain didn't post in one of my Hear Here posts.

the songs you selected are great songs. every body should learn and play them, as they are a delight.
you playing is better than your singing. you guitar is relaxed but your lungs aren't.
I haven't a natural good voice. I am learning how to use what I have. I learned right off singing in a good range and hitting pitch is step one. you hit the notes, although I think one of the songs was keyed towards your upper limit.
keep singing. use less head and more lower belly for pushing air. and sing the lyric with expression; each word, feeling it's meaning.
