Elmore just got mentioned above. Open D or E will work for most of his stuff. You can get a long way playing his version of "Dust My Broom." Lots of folks have. :D

I was actually starting to feel sick; going thru all those posts and NO ONE mentioned ELMO!!!!

His greatest disciple - Jeremy Spencer
(or Peter Green for that matter)

how come no one mentioned Ry Cooder, or Muddy Waters. And how about the country pickers like Junior Brown, he's amazing!

Junior Brown is just awesome :D I was just listening to "Barnyard Blues" 8)
What about Jack White?
Sure, he may not be the most technical slide player, but he can play the blues as well as anyone else in this thread.
One chord is fine.
Two you're pushing it.
Three and you're into jazz.

"A cheerful heart is good medicine."
Hi again !!
Correct !!!!
He made it sound mighty good, too, didn't he? :D
"A cheerful heart is good medicine."
Dang, I was hoping to mention Sonny Landreth and David Gilmore, but got beat to 'em.
Still how about a few more? I'm not saying any of these guys are part of the "10 Greatest", but they sure are worth a listen:
Son House - gotta love Death Letter Blues
Furry Lewis - Sloppy but great, unorthodox stuff
Roy Rogers - Several excellent albums, primarily slide guitar. Has a couple of Homespun lesson DVDs too
Watermelon Slim - Funny guy, plays lap-style, but uses a bottle-neck style slide. Check out "Fisco Line"
Kelly Joe Phelps - plays mostly fingerstyle now, but made his name early with his slide playing, such as on "Lead Me On". Just about my favorite player all around
And what about ole' Bob Brozman? The guy lives and breathes slide guitar, and he probably plays all tunings and instruments that can use a slide
Couple of Fat Possum's other old bluesmen I really like are Johnny Farmer and Charles Caldwell. Johnny Farmer's Vacation Blues just may be my very favorite of all the many versions of the Walking Blues tune out there. His style's rough, but oh man, is that song sweet!
