I was just fooling around with drop D tuning and came across Smokin' in the Boys Room by Motley Crue. It's so easy and it sounds so cool! 8) Iknow that Motley Crue used Drop D alot. What other rock/metal bands used this tuning? I would like to explore it further. I have read though it can make you a "lazy guitarist" because the chords are easier to play. Does this sound accurate? Also what acoustic songs sound good in drop D? Is the Goo Goo Dolls' Iris in Drop D or Double Drop D?

Thanks

Many metal bands use the dropped-D tuning, often tuned down a whole step so it's actually a "dropped-C" tuning. You will need some pretty heavy strings to do that though.. Don't know about the "lazy" part, but 1-5-1 power chords are easier since you just need to barre the three low strings.

Dropped-D is also used a lot by acoustic guitarists, can't think of any specific songs right now, but it's a 'classic' tuning among acoustic players.

Drop Tuning's made me lazy for a period. I wouldn't expirement to much mike, you are making really great progress without drop d as a crutch.

Dropped D power chord tunes don't have to be 'lazy' - try Lump to give your rhythm* and stretching a bit of a workout :)

*Anyone see Never Mind the Full Stops tonight? (UK TV, dunno if you can get it elsewhere...) One of the tasks was to invent an amusing mnemonic to help remember the spelling of 'rhythm'. Something incredibly boring won it, but another contestant came up with "Rolf Harris, you terribly hairy man"...

I'm just toying with it now...However, George Thorogood used it and so did Motley Crue...2 of my favorite bands...I tend to switch back and forth between the 2 during practice...

Thanks for the pointers

Lazy - I disagree. Even if you're just playing one-finger power chords you have to adjust to the fact that the root note isn't where it used to be.

I keep one of my guitars in drop D because I use it a lot. When you're playing fingerstyle/ classical it really gets your brain working to be in a different tuning.

Best,

I personally don't think using alternate tunings is going to make you lazy. Like Alan said, it makes you think differently & mixes things up. Mike has so many guitars anyways, he can keep a couple tuned differently at all times!

Well... It can make you lazy if you just play Korn style stuff with 2 notes, but since as musicians I think most of us posess a natural curiosity it can only help ot push your mind in different directions and thats Never a bad thing. Just keep your standard tuning technique up to scratch too, I made that mistake and had to spenda week re teaching myself hehe...

Standard tuning? Oh yeah, that weird mix of half Open E and half Open G!

I tend to think of standard as "Open Em11" open tuning. Or is that "Open A9sus4?"

Peace

So your telling me that ZakkWylde is a lazy Drop D user? Hohumm I think not! Drop D is as challenging as you make it.
