Sooner or later you'll want one of these: http://diamondbottlenecks.com/

There are tons of things that work as slides. A Craftsman deep socket is an old favorite. Lots of kinds of bottles and metal tubing. I've occasionally used a 20mm casing from a Vulcan aircraft cannon. A friend on Big Road Blues got a section cut from a 10 gauge shotgun barrel. Bicycle handlebar or frame tubing. A handle off an old refrigerator. Bearings, bushings, piston wrist pins from internal combustion engines...

Some have used bone, wood, plastic... I've not had very encouraging results with these sorts of materials, but if you want a short sustain sound, they might work. Ceramic materials are somewhat popular.

Basically you're only limited by your imagination and what you can find.

One of these days, I'm going to take a trip down to their workshop and take the camera with me. Should be a fun day out, don't you think!

:D :D :D

And you're all very welcome to peruse our workshops anytime - it'll be a pleasure to meet all of you guy's in person :D ! We've suffered quite badly over the last few years due to cheap Eastern European imports of glass coming into our shores - most of our original glass-making factories are long gone - and the cream of the glassblowers, engravers & repairmen seem to be just scraping by.......but - our local council has recently commissioned £500,000 of lottery money to create a 'working museum' featuring our own 150 year-old factory complex as a base for this venture - at last !

And....we're being featured in a television programme to be shown early next year about our little company - so onwards & upwards!

bluenotefla - the stone slides you're refering too are most likely made by Dugain, a French company specialising in stone & quartz crystal slides & plectrums....i've tried out a stone slide & it's very dull tone-wise with little volume & sustain - something similar to a cheap ceramic slide :?

Hey Vic - we're up your way next week (probably Tuesday) visiting Frank Frailer in Runcorn with a possibility to have Frailers as a Diamond Dealer.

........and lastly - thanks to all for the kind words again  .

Slide On!

Ian.

Runcorn, eh? Make sure you call in the Waterloo Hotel near the Bridge on High St for two pints of lager and a packet of crisps.......

Runcorn's not too far from me - about 8-9 miles I think - not been there very often though. And for the benefit of non-British readers, and even non-Lancastrians, the Bridge I referred to above - the Widnes/Runcorn road/rail bridge - is about 5 minutes away from Widnes railway station, where Paul Simon wrote "Homeward Bound."

Fingers crossed - good luck with Frailer's, Ian!
