Hi,
I bought a Pedal Steel guitar a couple of years ago and <gasp> I procrastinated and haven't learned how to play it.

What I would like to know is where do I start? I have no music background at all and I have liked the sound of the steel guitar.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks
Tom

Check this article by Bill McCloskey, it should give you a few pointers about how and where to get started. Good luck!!!

Also, Google up the link to "Brad's Page of Steel." It'll be helpful.

oh man, are you in for some challenge and great reward!

a big breakthrough , for me, in understanding where the chords are on a pedal steel was found by buying Mel Bay's E9 chord chart for pedal steel.

the diagrams opened doors for me.

from there I was able to play a few songs.
definately go to the Steel Guitar Forum site. absolutely the best site for steel in the world. it is full of knowledgeable and kind players from around the world.

use that site to learn which DVD or video is best o watch. I reccomend that. visuals help.

I found someone locally who is going to help me learn some plus he is associated with the local steel guitar association and they *wooooooooo* have a Steel Guitar show every year.

The problem I have is I have absolutely no musical background at all except listening so its kind of challenging since I have no clue about any of it. Although thru reading I have picked up some of the terms.

I am starting on a steel because I like the sound plus I got a really good deal on my steel guitar. I got a Carter D-12 Custom off ebay a couple of years ago with everything except a foot pedal.

That's great that you found a teacher! The pedal steel isn't exactly the easiest intrument to learn, so having a teacher will be a great advantage.

I'd also recommend that you join the Steel Guitar Forum, many great players there with lot of experience and wisdom to share. It costs $5 but its value cannot be measured in money.... In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if your teacher is already a member.
