I haven't visited the SSG in a while. Been away on a trip with poor Internet access. So I'm not a dropout.

In catching up on all of those Christmas letters that people send out, I came up with this rough draft. A mix of internal rhyme and end rhyme.

ANNUAL LETTER

Here's our annual letter.
We hope that things are better for you.
We've had a decent year.
Things are OK. Here's the news.

Our youngest finished college.
We know he'll use that knowledge someday.
He's working as a waiter,
But he'll find something later, we pray.

The addressee has left
There's a forwarding address, expired.
John's wife of forty years
Is no longer here. He's tired.

My health has been real bad
But don't think that these are sad holidays.
I see the grandkids a lot.
They ask me what I've bought or made.

We planned a little trip,
But then I broke my hip in May.
I'm taking things real slow,
But wish that I could go away.

Renee,
I like it, very descriptive, do you have a melody yet? As I was reading I was hearing one in my mind.

No, no melody yet. I need to come up with some words for the chorus, something about reading the next letter and hoping it's not bad news. Or maybe go in a different direction, saying that we must not be very good friends if we hear about these things in a Christmas letter.

Hi Renee,

Looks like a good start. At least you're way ahead on your 2012 Christmas letter :P

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, James. Your song inspired me to play a different instrument on this one, even though I don't play it well. Done on mandolin. Here is a link:

And the "final" lyrics:

chorus 1:

Let's write another annual letter
About our ups and downs.
Why do we wait for holidays
To send the news around?

verse 1:

Here's our annual letter.
We hope that things are better for you.
We've had a decent year.
Things are OK. Here's the news.

chorus 2/3/4/5:

Let's read another/Pick up another/On to the next/Here's another
...............annual letter
About friends ups and downs
Why do we wait for holidays
To send the news around?

verse 2:

Our youngest finished college.
We know he'll use that knowledge someday.
He's working as a waiter,
But he'll find something later, we pray.

verse 3:

The addressee has left
There's a forwarding address, expired.
My wife of forty years
Is no longer here and I'm tired.

verse 4:

My health has been real bad
But don't think that these are sad holidays.
I see the grandkids a lot.
They ask me what I've bought or made.

verse 5:

We planned a little trip,
But then I broke my hip in May.
I'm taking things real slow,
But wish that I could go away.

Simple and pure? LOL! Because simple is all I can play on mando. I do usually tend to make my music more complex to try to keep it from sounding like everything else.

BTW, I know we were supposed to write about sports. Since I know nothing about the topic, I chose to write about something else rather than skip it entirely. I've missed a few weeks while vacationing and not having good Internet access or wanting to miss any of the vacation activities.

Well, that's better than me. I only remembered we were supposed to write with internal rhyme and forgot the sports somewhere along the line, but we both got new songs out of the assignment so......TOUCHDOWN!
