I can't believe I've managed to do something! That probably means I'll catch the devil later because of all the things I haven't done...

Anyway, I think that everyone is finding this assignment kind of onery and I understand that. Originally, this was meant to be for either Vic or Paul (pbee), but when I was playing around with the chord voicings, I strummed the beginning bit and thought, "That sounds like Neil..." ("Chefie," not "Young!" ). Thinking of Neil gave me a title and a recurring theme and that's how the lyrics finished up. At least so far...

So here's to you, sir!

The Land of Enchantment

She dreams of greens
That are not turquoise
She dreams of singing
Without tears in her voice
She dreams of her life in the land of enchantment
Before all the enchantment was gone

He dreams of flavors
He's never tasted
He dreams of buying back
Every moment that he's wasted
He dreams of their life in the land of enchantment
Before all the enchantment was gone

But oh
Will she ever know
That dreams are not a home

And oh
Will he never learn
To stir up the embers
And to smile while they burn

‘Cause starlight
Will still fill up the sky
For hundreds of thousands of years
After every star has died
Singing their song down on the land of enchantment
Long after all the enchantment is gone

EDIT (for those of you playing at home  ):

Even though it sounds complicated (and the chord names look dauting!), the chords used are fairly easy open voicings. The opening two chords are:

Amaj9 - x06600
Dmaj13 - x54600

I use my ring finger (D string) and pinky (G string) on the first chord because I can then get the second chord without a lot of shifting around. The introduction, interlude between the first and second verses and the outro are just arpeggios of these two chords:
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +

E - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 0 - - - - - - - - - - - - -
B - - - - - - - - - - - 0 - - - - - 0 - - - - - - - - - -
G - - - - - - - - 6 - - - - - - - - - - - 6 - - - - - - -
D - - - - - 6 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
A - - 0 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
E - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +

E - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 0 - - - - - - - - - - - - -
B - - - - - - - - - - - 0 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
G - - - - - - - - 6 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
D - - - - - 4 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
A - - 5 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
E - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

All the other chords are as follows:

Amaj9 - x06600
Dmaj13 - x54600
A9 - x05600
Dadd9 - xx0770
Dm6 - xx0460
Amaj7 - x02120
F#7 - xx4320 (or x44320)
Bm7 - x20202
E7 - 076700
B13 - x21220
C9 - x32330

And here's the "cheat sheet." I tried to make it every chord symbol equal four beats:
Amaj9 Dmaj13
She dreams of greens
Amaj9 Dmaj13
That are not turquoise
Amaj9 Dmaj13
She dreams of singing
Amaj9 A9
Without tears in her voice
Dadd9 Dm6 Amaj7 F#7
She dreams of her life in the land of enchantment
Bm7 Bm7 E7 E7
Before all the enchantment was gone

Amaj9 Dmaj13
He dreams of flavors
Amaj9 Dmaj13
He's never tasted
Amaj9 Dmaj13
He dreams of buying back
Amaj9 A9
Every moment that he's wasted
Dadd9 Dm6 Amaj7 F#7
He dreams of their life in the land of enchantment
Bm7 E7 Amaj9 A9
Before all the enchantment was gone

Dadd9
But oh
Dm6 Amaj9 A9
Will she ever know
Dadd9 Dm6 Amaj9 A9
That dreams are not a home
Dadd9
And oh
Dm6 Amaj7 F#7
Will he never learn
B13
To stir up the embers
B13 C9 E7
And to smile while they burn

Amaj9
‘Cause starlight
Dmaj13 Amaj9 Dmaj13
Will still fill up the sky
Amaj9 Dmaj13
For hundreds of thousands of years
Amaj9 A9
After every star has died
Dadd9 Dm6 Amaj7 F#7
Singing their song down on the land of enchantment
Bm7 E7 Amaj9 Dmaj13
Long after all the enchantment is gone

Thanks again to everyone for the kudos and also for listening.

Peace

Gee David,

I hardly know what to say. You did me better than me. Not just in style, but you captured the lyrics as well.

And the verse;
He dreams of flavors
He's never tasted
He dreams of buying back
Every moment that he's wasted
He dreams of their life in the land of enchantment
Before all the enchantment was gone

I wish i'd written that.

For some reason I want to say "Thanks."

Neil

David

Very Nice! I like the title and recurring theme as it connects with
Neil's place of residents. I think this fits his style very well with the
chord voicings and the flow of the lyrics. I could also hear Paul doing
this but think he might add some conga and change the rhythm some.
Seems a little mellow for Vic.

Very nice David,
yes this would suit Neil. I can also see things in here that I might have written for example

He dreams of their life in the land of enchantment
Before all the enchantment was gone
the double use of words is something I really approve of, and the him/her/they balance. John your quite right I would play this differently, more rhythm (but thats only because I suck big time at finger picking) and some congas in there would be nice.

There isnt anything that I would change with this song, good work

cheers
Paul

There's very minimal picking here, Paul! Just some arpeggios I'm sure you could handle.

Thank you all for your kind words. This originally started out much differently, not even close to this mellow, but for whatever reason (probably the weather - right, John? ) I tried slowing it down quite a bit, which led to adding major seventh chords and that's when the connection to Neil took place.

For whatever it's worth, despite how it sounds, all of these are easy chords and I'd be happy to write it out is anyone's interested.

Thanks again! Now maybe I can still work something up for Vic...

Peace

I know I could use some time in a warmer drier climate right about now.

Amen to that! happy first day of spring.

Nice job on this one David, I can hear Neil (chefie or young) doing this easily.

Apart from the fact I wouldn't change a single word of the lyrics, and the music fits said lyrics like a glove, there's nothing much I can say about this.....except I tried the chords, and they're a bit too tricky for me to change between with any fluency.

I'd love to hear Neil singing this!
