Written from the devil's p.o.v. as a conversation/note to god. :|

Think jazz. Think Tom Waits. 8)

Saints Are Sinners (SSG Yr6 Wk22)

1.
mmm…..why can't you forgive?
You know how I am, yeah you know how it is
Aint this a lover's tiff?
You should know, you wrote this riff

Angels get short changed on free will
That's the cost of wings, well it just keeps rising
Yeah I got high on your manna pills
Woke up in the gutter, covered in your silver linings

Chorus
Oh don't you think that I've done time?
Everybody's fishing for religion, but I've got mine
Sitting outside your gates, I'll wait to be asked back inside
Hey baby even the greatest saints are sinners sometimes

2.
Hey I recall you drawing up them plans
Gonna make a free world and teach the girls to dance
When they needed reasons to obey your commands
My two left feet kicked out ‘til things got out of hand

Now I'm banned from your bar
But from the start you supplied the wine
That got me drunk and got me dark
You can't truly claim this all escaped your mind

Chorus
Oh don't you think that I've done time?
Everybody's fishing for religion, but I've got mine
Sitting outside your gates, I'll wait to be asked back inside
Hey baby even the greatest saints are sinners sometimes

3.
If you didn't love me ya coulda just said
Didn't have to go making me the devil instead
If you can't forgive me I'm better off dead
Why'd ya have to make me the devil instead?

Chorus
Oh don't you think that I've done time?
Everybody's fishing for religion, and so am I
Waiting to be reeled back inside by one of your lines
Hey baby even the greatest saints are sinners sometimes

I might even post an .mp3 tomorrow am!

Think Tom Waits

Now that got my attention ...

You really do write a beautiful passage In my Opinion ..

This is just wonderful :

Angels get short changed on free will
That's the cost of wings, well it just keeps rising
Yeah I got high on your manna pills
Woke up in the gutter, covered in your silver linings

I like it a lot

Cheers
Trev..

Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am

Reminds me of Tom Waits, Heart attack and Vine
"They say there ain't no devil there's just God when he's drunk."

These are great lyrics.

I love that song!!! :D :D Don't seem to have it on the Waits stuff that's on my comp though.

Yeah, this one was the result of just thinking about the topic - growing up on the blues, I kinda felt everything that could be said using the devil had been said, then this idea (also not wholly original, I know) popped out and it seemed to flow quite easily. Right I'm gonna grab my tele and see if I can't get a rough version of this one sorted asap. Thanks for the comments! :D

All I can add is that I love it! I've always felt Lucifer got a bad rap!

Falling in love is like learning to play the guitar; first you learn to follow the rules, then you learn to play with your heart.

Sorry, I still can't think "Tom Waits" - I still don't know enough about the guy to make a valid comparison/observation, though I think I'm getting the general idea. This struck me as more Hendrix-ish in a Little Wing kind of mood (bet that shocked you!) - a kind of low-key ballad.

Nothing much to add to previous comments - there's nothing sticks out that needs changing to me. On the other hand, there's quite a few lines I wish I'd beaten you to!

Nice, interesting take on the assignment!

:D :D :D

Scrybe :

If you use Audacity for recording , you can click the window in the top right hand side of Audacity and "Stereo Mix " will fall down , select that , press record then play the you tube ...

Then you will have your very own copy on that song ...

Of course this should be used and NOT abused ..

Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am

Scrybe,

What is it with the Tom Wait influence this week? Lavadave did a Waits type piece also.
Well, that's OK with me Tom is GREAT and so is this song.

Good Job

I just love this chorus, I can see the audience naturally joining in when you sing this live.

Oh don't you think that I've done time?
Everybody's fishing for religion, but I've got mine
Sitting outside your gates, I'll wait to be asked back inside
Hey baby even the greatest saints are sinners sometimes

I sang this chorus several ways and found this tweak may make it flow better vocally:

"...Sitting outside your gates, Till I'm asked back inside.."

Did you start with the chorus and then write the verses?

Please post any recording you do of this one - it looks like a keeper.

All the best,

Chris

Vic - the cords are more Stomry Monday than Little Wing. But the vocal line very, um, 'performance piece' if that makes any sense.

Barnabus - cheers for the tip. I have the song on cd somewhere, I just have a huge stack of cds and no idea where in the stack it is, but it'd be good to have copy until my one turns up again.

Everyone collectively - cheers for the comments, I totally love this song as well, I'm made up David prompted it when he did - I've been noodling with chords like those used this piece quite a bit lately, but wouldn't have thought to write this now without an external stimulus, which the SSG provided. Brilliant coincidence, I guess. I think it's definitely a keeper, I just gotta put some work in to get the vocals where they should be consistently. I might mess around with a capo and see if its easier in another key. Then I just gotta commit the thing to tape, as it were. CCourtney - I'll keep your suggestion in mind as O'm working on the recording.

Actually, yesterday I was making some notes on arrangements for tunes I wanna record (yup, still waiting on that keyboard and amp  ) and looking at the songs, it was surprising how many of them were SSG tunes. And some of the ones that had me most excited were only written because of the SSG (e.g. this one, Put The Devil Back In Hell, and Linen and Lace). Lomb may it continue, say I!

Now, I gotta get back to posting some comments of my own....I've been pretty slack on that of late.
