SSG11-Week6 Whatever Happened to the You I Knew

http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12043840

=================Revised Version====================

Whatever happened to the you I knew?
I’m investigating pardon if I snoop
It doesn’t take a Sherlock Holmes to see the clues
But whatever happened to the you I knew?

Call it elementary dear Watson
When crime of passion hits its mark
Far worse than being a victim
Is living with your cold, cold heart

Whatever happened to the you I knew?
I deduce your distance as disturbing proof
I’m not your Moriarty in a vengeful feud
So whatever happened to the you I knew?

Murder 101 is messy business
Relationships are killed everyday
But even Englishmen with stiff upper lips
Fancy a roll in the hay

Call it elementary dear Watson
When crime of passion hits its mark
Far worse than being a victim
Is living with your cold, cold heart
Whatever happened to the you I knew?
Whatever happened to the you I knew?
Whatever happened to the you I knew?

=================Original Version====================

Have a duty to do

Whatever happened to the fourteen hours since I posted the assignment? You don't sleep weekends, do you (and that's even taking into account your being on the flip side of the IDL!)?

Nice moody piece and I can here a lot of dark blues-y guitar lines doing a call-and-response in the chorus. That could be a lot of fun!

The "weekly quibble" would be with the second verse section:
Call it elementary dear Watson
London takes its toll on you
But even Englishmen with stiff upper lips
Have a duty to do

The "London" in the second line, aside from going along with the "Holmes" idea, doesn't truly track with the rest of the song's focus on failed romance and passion. Maybe using some of the ideas from the first verse (even its rhyme scheme) could tie things in (and forgive the borrowing from Graham Parker):
Call it elementary dear Watson
There's no flame of passion lighting up the dark
But even Englishmen with stiff upper lips
Can find some hope of squeezing out a spark

Just a thought.

Enjoyed this one immensely. And it's not even noon here on Sunday! Well, just about to be...

Looking forward to more. Always!

Peace

I am not following the murder (is it a metaphor?) or how the singer fits. Perhaps a more descriptive substitute for the four-syllable word "relationship" (which does not tell me much)

Relationship murder is nasty business

with a descriptor-relationship combination of words like
emotion descriptor - jealous, angry, jilted, obsessed, insane, deranged, faithful, quiet, enraged, unknown, etc.
relationship - lover, husband, housewife, father, mother, sister, brother, cousin, uncle, best friend, stalker, neighbor, close friend, schoolmate, classmate, stranger, etc.

(and forgive the borrowing from Graham Parker):

This song may not have happened if the singee-ee heeded Graham's advice "don't bother with the local girls"

Thanks Dave and Andy for the listens and constructive feedback :D I've revised a bit. Lucky for me today is a national holiday

Here's a break down of the process---------

I tried step by step through the process I suggested to Vic in the thread post
http://forums.guitarnoise.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=42038&start=180

Sunday 8 AM -read the assignment of the week

5:15PM->Think of a flash of inspiration....
Initial thoughts
Gwenn Stephanie –swing style verse Am-C-E
Chorus-A-F-E-D –Janet Jackson climb f-d-g-e-a Queen
“all these fairy tales are full of it”
Whatever happened to --------- (has to be a noun)

Whatever happened to love
Whatever happened to us
Whatever happened to
What-EV-er HAP-pened to Christmas
Whatever happened to God
Whatever happened to Pluto
Beatles- free –Whatever happened to
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYfiRvL-zUU

Checking emails- 20 mins can’t get what I think is a Maroon 5 song chorus out of my head so just record the snipet….chords are just A-D…nothing exceptional
Think literally of the elements of the assignment...
Think symbolically of the elements of the assignment...
Assignment: This week you get a title and a first line, or most of it anyway:

Whatever happened to _______________________?
If this is the first line, will it repeat in the verse more than once, or first line of every verse? Or just a starting point, but if it is to be the title too, then it would have to be more an A-A-A form or A-A-B-A rather than verse/chorus….
Yesterday questions similar “What happened”
Any jokes?
My caterpillar-became a butterfly
My little girl- grew up
A place- Eden? Drive in? VDO shop? Something outdated?
WHT-----nothing, it’s still here

WHT to the Earth----child on Mars
WHT to the promise, wedding vows, championship, white picket fence
It’s still here it just looks different from this side of the fence
WHT Black and White…now there’s 50 shades of grey

5:43---Google some quotes about the topic....
whatever happened to the caped crusader
whatever happened to hilary swank

came across
whatever happened to baby jane
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIkwjXY7Nvw

Watched some clips and read the lyrics to "WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?"
Bobby Helfer and Frank De Vol
Bette Davis and Debbie Burton

Google some pictures about the topic....

Possible –child actors song then and now---

Grab a guitar and start noodling around....record any interesting tidbits....if nothing more then

6:33-7:15 Dinner

Go through a book of song titles I bought (Here are 12 free preview pages)
http://www.freado.com/read/8163/song-id ... -lyricists
I saw this title and wanted to see how it would develop "Whatever happened to the you I knew?"

Started watching a movie Stiff Upper Lips – 12 mins

9:25 PM

Murder is a nasty business
When crimes of passions hit their mark
Is living with a cold, cold heart

I said I love, I love, I love you
I thought you loved me too
I said uh-hu, uh-hu I love you
It’s not even Christmas and I’m getting Scrooged

Now you say we’re through

I said I loved you; thought you loved me too
But now it’s like I never knew you
My Cinderella shoe
The lover who said they were nothing but true

A la Adele….or Rhab…a la ghoe

They say never let a fool kiss you and never be fooled by a kiss
They say

Go back and reread the topic....if nothing then

10:00 PM Printed off 1st draft of lyrics for a run-through

10:50 PM Finished Rough Demo to post for feedback at SSG

11:25 PM Bed Time

Sometime around 4 AM jotted down a line or two

Monday 7:30-7:40 Quick check and saw Dave’s suggestions

9:00 AM Saw Andy’s comment:------tried to clarify the story line

9:00-11 AM Recording program kept crashing when trying to add bass part, but finally finished; would like to add organ horns, but tired of messing with the program crashes

11:30 Reposted new version- wait for feedback

An awful lot of work done very quickly and very well. I've been reading the Complete Sherlock Holmes collection on and off for the last 12 months. The books and short stories are very different than the movie and TV versions. Holmes and Watson are a great choice for the "Whatever happened to..." mystery song.

A close reading of the stories indicates that Conan Doyle needed a continuity assistant. There are quite a few inconsistencies from one story to the next. Watson's wound and the name of his wife are two such inconsistencies.

Hi again, James

Like the re-write. The "fancy a roll in the hay" line is great!

And I think I'm exhausted just reading about the process... Thanks for the breakdown into what went into doing this.

To John - you might want to check out the old "Sherlock Holmes" series that PBS ran ages ago (as part of their "Mystery" program), starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes. The scripts are truly as close to the original stories as you're likely to find and Brett is probably the best Holmes portrayer that we're likely to see.

Peace

Overall, I like it. But I have some trouble with the whole murder allegory when describing the end of a relationship.

Hi Renee,

Thanks for the feedback. :D
I have some trouble with the whole murder allegory when describing the end of a relationship.

Not that an explanation will change your point of view into "liking" the idea, but here is the thought process:

It' an old idea- hating a person is equal to murdering them in your heart
http://bible.cc/1_john/3-15.htm

Here to the singer is saying worse than that is being indifferent or "cold-hearted"

I read too the opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference.
