The Post Office.

They shut down the Post Office on Wargrave Road,
And they shut down the one in Water Street,
Now there's only one left in the whole of this town,
Twenty thousand people all tread the same beat.......

(Chorus)
They open in the morning at half-past-eight,
Get there early or wait in a queue,
They close every night at half-past-six,
Be there for four or there's nothing for you.......

There's a little sub-office on the High Street,
A newspaper shop with one counter-pane,
Fifteen people crushed inside,
A hundred people outside in the rain....

(Chorus - repeat)

I used to have to walk two hundred yards,
Now it's a mile and a half into town,
And half a mile of that is the queue,
The whole damn town is closing down........

Maybe that's the whole idea.....?
Maybe that's the whole idea.....?
Maybe that's the whole idea.....?
Maybe that's the whole idea.....?

-----------------------------------------------

This is probably the most political I'll ever get - but when you see 80-odd year old people queuing up in the rain from about 8am because the government wants to - quote - rationalise the service industries - what the hell is rational about making 25000 people use one office with six windows.........

But that's government for you........

Sorry I haven't been able to critique any songs for a week or so, problems this end.......but now I'm back ...heh heh ... but I've looked and enjoyed your writing - but critique one, you have to critique them all, and honestly, I could not spare the time...........

Anyway, keep writing everyone.....anyone else noticed how standards are rising week by week on here?

:D :D :D :D :D

Hey Vic!,

Welcome back, man. Hope this week is more quiet for you. I think political songs are the hardest to write. Although some of my favorites seemed quite adept at it. But I think you did a grand job here. Always wonder about the bureaucrats. It must be rational to someone. I especially liked your ending. I don't usually like fade-out endings, but I think in this case, a fade out would probably work well.

hello vic,

see you're back in the internet:)) maybe mail me sometime soon?

anyway the song is more important here, right?
the subject is interesting(I'd probably never thought of writing about this)
I agree with scratch on the ending. I think the last verse and the fade-out ending are the best part of the song:)
Now it's a mile and a half into town,
And half a mile of that is the queue,
The whole darn town is closing down :D :D
sorry, it's not funny, isn't it...really good job.
critique one, you have to critique them all damn right. since school has started again I've got like no free time at all...basically choose the ones I read after the title now...shame on me:( *apologise to everyone I've not answered* sometimes I do read all posts but just don't have time to reply or can't think of anything to reply...
