EDIT: I managed to post a rough demo version of this, recorded in my hotel bedroom using the mic from my webcam....here's the link...

Edit...Sun 14 Aug....re-recorded this, here's the link to the newly recorded version on Soundclick....

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/9/viclewis_music.htm

Hope you like it....left a whole verse so's Tracker or Teleplayer or Smokindog can add a slide solo....that's what it needs to finish it off...

_____________________________________________________________

As I said in another post, I'm impressed by the standard of the submissions this week...I've had something of a writer's block the last few weeks, and I wasn't that happy with the last couple I posted before that - anyway, enough rambling, this is my effort for this week....

Think protest song, think Dylan...fairly uptempo...just four verses, no choruses, simple acoustic guitar backing (C, F and G chords)...

Blood On Your Hands

I see politicians slap themselves on the back,
"Congratulations, we're on the right track!"
Well it seems to me you're nowhere near,
And it's time you all got something clear,
When it's time to help you don't give a damn,
And you've already got too much blood on your hands.

You sit back in the lap of luxury,
Despise those who ain't rich and free.
The poverty line means nothing to you,
When it comes to compassion you ain't got a clue,
And the starving millions in arid lands?
You've already got their blood on your hands.

In your shiny suits and your slicked-back hair,
You hand out crumbs and pretend to care,
You could do so much if you really tried,
But you don't give a hoot for those who've died,
I hope your consciences were pricked by those bands,
Because you've already got too much blood on your hands.

And all those promises you never keep,
I wonder how do you ever sleep,
Im pretty sure you got no souls,
Where your hearts should be there's deep black holes,
You don't give a damn for your fellow man,
And you've already got too much blood on your hands.
No You don't give a damn for your fellow man,
And you've already got too much blood on your hands.

Vic.

Hi Vic,

“Blood on your hands” nice hook. I like the way you use it at the end of each verse, that works nicely. As a protest song this works for me cos' you gotta point the finger and take a stand, which is clearly what's happening here. I can just hear Dylan singing this, good work :D .

Hmmm....looking back over this, I noticed in the second verse I used the phrase "the starving millions" twice in three lines - the third line did read, "The starving millions mean nothing to you"....I'm going to edit my original post and substitute a different line....I've been agonising over two different lines, but I think the one I chose fits....almost a double-entendre....

Vic

(Oh yeah, changed the chords around as well - instead of C F & G, read D G & A....just a slightly better key for my voice...going to try and record this later....)

Hi Vic,

First time I've looked on this forum.

Very apt for the G8

Brilliant words and phrasing.

When I started reading this I couldn't help trying to fix it to a tune. It fitted well to "Working Class Hero" in my head. It could almost be that you picked up where JL left off.

What do you think?

Hey Vic!,

Well done. I can't add much to what's already been said. Like Celt said, I read it in Dylan's voice, and it definitely works well. Very Dylan-esque. Good job on the assignment, and a terrific song.

whoa. that was really good. the first verse didnt really do too much for me. still good but i didnt think it was anything too special. the next two verses were VERY good. maybe when you say 'you sit back in the lap of luxry' you could say 'despisin those who aint rich free' i think it sounds better. also, the last 2 lines of the 3rd stanza doesnt sound right. the wording is just awkward. it doesnt really take too much out of the song though. the last stanza was so awesome. i really like it. the repetition at the end would sound really good too. dylan would be proud

p.s. played my mum your "nothing i can do" and she was like oh this is really beautiful(and she said your voice was pleasant  ), which is something special for her to say about a song, even more when it's in a foreign language so she can't fully understand the lyrics;)
