Aww, great fun! Only just had time to start this a few hours ago, so please bear with me where the lines are a bit of a mouthful.. also tried to record this (not having to dream up a melody/chords being a blessing!), but feel like I could make it sound better so haven't actually posted any mp3 anywhere.. and it's getting too late now to keep practising.
Here goes:

Liam

Oh we were a-wandering, me and my dear
And he told me about his childhood fear
Now in hindsight I can scarce trust my ears
It being the day ‘ere he died

Out among the oak ghosts of the old forest
Where we once built leaf tepees and pounded our chests,
Charged at birds like horses at Conor's behest
For it was then we got into our stride

In the noon, in the noon of our days in Howth
Which we made a speck on the map b‘tween us both
But come home we did and he chose the coast
It being the day ‘ere he died

He said: “Lil, the fog fills my mouth but this will out.
I can't keep it forever” and so it came about
That I heard of the nightmare that without fail or doubt
Has, for years, taken him down its stride

As we broke through the forest above the sea
He said the waves were tongues in the throat of a beast
Dozing in the core of the earth, moving white crescent teeth
And every childhood swim a blindside

Said I, let's forget those old troubles and go
Back to our mother who's shivering and bold
We'll carry the logs and she'll feed us like afore
On sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie

Little did I know that we'd not meet again
For the boat he took back to his job and to Jane
It was swallowed by the sea in a sudden swirl of the weather vane
And no body was found in the tide

Oh we were a-wandering, me and my dear
And he told me about his childhood fear
Now in hindsight I can scarce trust my ears
It being the day ‘ere he died

Cheers,
straycat.

Hi Straycat,

What a great (and tragic) story! This seems like a great combination of structure from another source combined with your gift for details and images. :D I really like stanzas 2, 5, and 6 but all work well together.

I don't know what the original song is, but it comes across as a waltz time, or sailor, or Irish type song.

I hope you do find time to post an MP3.

Thanks for sharing.

James

Thanks a million, James! Really glad you like #5!

One of your guesses at the original was very close! Shall I tell you? Well, you'll find it here:

(This way someone else can still have a guess, if they want to  )

Am trying to convince a friend of mine to sing on this one  I'll let you know if we do get an mp3 together!

Cheers,
straycat.
